Early Access Review
Okay so, first impressions were okay. AI was a bit janky, controls and animations are a bit jank, performance is sort of not good. None of that actually matters too much right now, its an early access title, these things will be worked on with our feedback and I'm sure alot is placeholder so that we can actually play the game.

That being said, I want to bring attention to the water mechanic. Water is a resource that is tied both to progression and your loss condition. Getting more water unlocks more traders and features in your hideout, something that's a cool idea.
Running out of it entirely causes everybody to die, and essentially does a game reset minus your character EXP. Your items get deleted, that sort of thing.

The issue is that this water mechanic is tied to real life time, not just when you're playing, when you aren't playing either. A barrel of water equals 24 hours of time you buy yourself before your material progress is deleted entirely. The devs claim so that this has you thinking about FW and are anxious about it even when not playing, and is explained to be "fun".

A bold choice, however that will ultimately turn this game into a chore no matter what gets fixed, no matter what gets better, no matter what gets worse. Making it so that it's mandatory for you to return to this game and find a few barrels of water so that you can keep your progress between breaks on it, or hell even keeping your progress over the work week will make anybody eventually dislike it. Instead of being able to play whatever you want, this game demands that you put down whatever it is you're doing and dedicate some time to it if you want to keep what you've worked for.

They got feedback, negative mostly, about the system before this launch, and their response was to make water more common, not really fixing anything, just making it a non issue while you're actively playing.

Hopefully these devs take the feedback that a commitment of this nature is sort of a deal breaker for a huge number of people. This doesn't make the game "hard" or any more "hardcore". There are hundreds of hardcore experiences that don't punish you for taking breaks. This makes me afraid to get into it because what if my other commitments wipe away everything I've worked for here.
If you're a fan of the kinda game that demands your attention like this then sure go ahead, I'm sure in time that this will be a great product. The art direction is pretty good and it's a cool setting. Buuuuut, there's a pretty big elephant in the room right now. Hopefully they shoo it out or alter it somehow.

Quick edit. Just wanted to mention a bug in the game that scared the ♥♥♥♥ out of me and I thought was funny. A functional tank was somehow flung towards me, almost crushing me in the process.
I had fun with my time so far. That one mechanic is what's scaring me off.

ONE MORE EDIT FOR NOW.
Instead of just saying "This is is ♥♥♥♥, fix it.", I should ALSO say a potential way to fix it. I imagine the devs would like to keep some semblance of punishment for not playing, which while I personally don't like it at all, compromises would in fact alienate less people. Maybe instead of losing everything in your stash, you just lose everybody. No traders, no help, no lifeline. Just you, and whatever goodies you have left to try and make a comeback. This is still punishing, but in a way to where it might scare off less people. It would still be a chore to avoid it, but maybe one that more people could live with.

Another edit, 9/25/2024
I did NOT imagine this many people would see this, if you're reading this now and were interested in the game before please, please check in every so often to see where the game is at. As an early access literally everything talked about in this review could be changed, so please for the love of god keep checking in. This game looks like it has some really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good potential, it's just this one mechanic.

Hi Melon Man,
We really appreciate the detailed feedback! The concerns around the previous water system were a major focus for us, which is why the newest update introduces Water 3.0. Water no longer drains in real time and now acts as a resource for accessing regions rather than a looming loss condition. This means you can take breaks without the fear of losing everything. Alongside this, we’ve also made improvements to AI spawning & awareness, network fixes, overall game performance, and more based on player feedback. There is now more content in game and it should play differently than the last time you were in the innards! If you check it out again, we’d love to hear how it feels with these changes. Please feel free to leave us additional feedback in our Discord as we are always looking to improve!

Yeah I mean the mechanic screamed microtransactions even before the new update, and now with the addition of the "Water Drones" they've made the resemblance even uncannier. The Water Drones are exactly the kind of feature you'ed find in a Free to Play game; the kind of feature which would require to get the "Premium Plan" and pay a subscription fee for.

I think they intended/intend to monetize it, and so tried to ease people into the idea. Eventually you’ll be able to pay for a replenishing water device or something. They’ll justify it by saying “this is to provide committed, hardcore players with the freedom to enjoy the most challenging elements of our game” and “if you require such a consistent stream of water, it means that this game is taking up a lot of your time. So it’s only fair that you invest in something that makes up such a significant part of your life.”

Otherwise, I have no idea why they would put it in. They’re very talented and visionary developers. Certainly they’re aware of how absurd this game breaking mechanic is.

But if they ask you to pay them for the problem that they created to begin with, you at least get to know that you’re dealing with a pack of thieves. Such individuals, no matter how good their game is, don’t deserve a drop of your respect, let alone your credits.

ill probably end up refunding, likely will NEVER buy ANYTHING from this studio.
just think: THEY THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA.
that alone means that the studio will forever be suspect, because they will forever try to trick you, or implement other things like this.

Plus having a mechanic like that will probably limit their playerbase and make them niche which would bad both fans and the game itself. And if there are people that get super pissed that this change, if it gets changed, then frankly the devs should just show them door because toxic, crazy people like that aren't worth having in your customer base anyway.

I'm sorry but a game should never have a mechanic, even if it's less severe, that actively punishes players for simply not playing it, especially for a game where the developers don't actively benefit or get paid from having players log in daily. And even if they did that still wouldn't make it justifiable, and would be one of the most abusive and predatory monetization schemes that would probably make most AAA publishers green with envy.

I've refunded the game solely for the fact that there's a water mechanic. I find it incredibly obnoxious for a game dev to punish me for not playing their game, something I've spent money on. It's not hardcore, it's just plain mean against the player. I have a life and if a game is going to try and punish me for having that, I'd rather not deal with it.

I'll buy the game again if they remove this mechanic but otherwise this is it.

I have infact been keeping tabs on the game and will indeed come back if changes occur.

I'm really hoping Melon Man returns to update us if they change it, as I've kinda just shoved this game off my radar entirely due to this water mechanic. I get those who are saying "It's easy to get water" yes, that's true, but to leave a game, and come back to it after a while, either due to work, pc bricking, other big game releases just happening to chain together at the right time, only to find "EVERYTHING" is gone, I'd just never play again, ever.
Yahoo My Strat Oct 6, 2024 @ 5:05am
Oh, so it wipes even if you're not logged in? Yeah, deal breaker. Bummer.

Just forces players to constantly be online to boost play count charts. Pretty shit actually.

chiming in on this thread just to say me and my buddy were really looking forward to this but decided not to get it for now because of the water mechanics. It's not even that I don't think we'd play regularly enough, it's that I don't like that we can't just put it down for a few weeks/months and then come back to it without all our shit being gone.
