Gates of Hell is now in a state where I can confidently say that this game is worth buying. Aesthetically, the game is beautiful and it is much more stable for a GEM2 engine game. There is plenty of content available for the base game alone and various gamemodes make a return from the old Men of War style combat zones to new ones such as dynamic campaign.

New assets are a welcome site after previous Men of War titles rehashing the same voice lines, unit models, and textures over and over again. Moreover, the campaigns are a vast improvement as they include both the original Faces of War style missions as well as Assault Squad skirmish style too.

The quality of playable content itself can vary and it is clear that different teams have worked on different projects as various missions have noticeable bugs and scripting errors - this goes the same for DLC too. Furthermore, it is a shame that there is a lack of GUI scaling (particularly lack of 4K support) considering this is a modern title and should have modern standards.

Personally, I play this game for it's sandbox content where I can create my own projects and share with the growing Gates of Hell community on the workshop. There is also a strong multiplayer scene although I am not much into playing online myself.

As this is one of the later releases of a game using the GEM2 engine, it is regularly updated, hotfixed, and patched by the developers and they do indeed listen to community feedback. However, I cannot justify the game's pricing if you want to play other WW2 factions, such as the United States, Commonwealth, Finland, and access to other units. It is not pay to win, but for a game about WW2 factions and locking the player to essentially only the Soviet Union and a limited German roster is outrageous.

My advice would be to either download mods from the workshop, such as 'Valour' to play as any faction you want for free, or buy this game plus it's DLC when a Steam sale occurs. Otherwise I simply cannot justify 'Total War WARHAMMER style' pricing.

Overall, I highly recommend this title as it is the latest iteration of the WW2 RTS on the GEM2 engine with 64-bit support and amazing overall asset quality despite it's shortcomings in mission quality and pricing. I hope to see more from BarbedWireStudios in the future!
