More interesting reviews on Fenol Baron Approves Curator Page

So, after 66 hours of play, the world is at my feet, the legions adore me, the Senate is afraid, and the people of Rome greet me with flowers. Was this trip exciting? Oh yeah! It also has some strange moments, so the conversation will turn out to be long, get ready. Expecting just a good successor to X-COM, on release I got a multi-layered tactical turn-based rpg with a great storyline, the real impact of your actions on the future of this game world, solving many plot obstacles is non-linear and a lot of interesting game elements that begin to unfold as your skill increases. The creators bring a wide variety of things to the mosaic of their game, almost all of which work perfectly. Actually, big questions arise only in the global strategic part of the game, and then only in the third act, where there was a little lack of sense of proportion (and judging by the list of fixes in a future patch, this will be polished)

Setting. Ancient Rome, man… Ancient Rome. How much we miss more RPG games on this inexhaustible theme of adventure. Legionnaires rattling their shiny armor, senators having sharp conversations with each other among the majestic white walls, the smell of wanderings and conquests, conspiracies and wine. The plot in the game is simply excellent, and you feel like not just a participant in it, but its architect. The player then throws in military campaigns, then returns to Rome, and it is still unknown where the risk of his life is more serious. The secondary characters are also well developed, with their own interesting stories, often stretching across the entire game, while also fitting in well with the larger epic story unfolding in front of you. As the game progresses, you will inevitably encounter a large number of major historical figures, often reshaping history as you wish. The choice of the player here really affects everything; even minor things can backfire in the finale, drastically changing the fate of the characters. The final act of the game is also variable, I managed to see two completely different huge final parts that last for many hours, which are perceived and played with another feelings, not at all looking like reskins of each other. That is, even after a huge amount of playing time, the creators in the final cared about an unbanal plot, about finding something new and interesting for the player. It deserves respect.

The turn-based combat here is very intense and develops along the way. The game was completed on the penultimate difficulty mode with "death in battle" turned on, and if at first there were no difficulties, then the further, the tougher everything became, reaching its climax in Act 3. Interesting maps with the possibility of non-trivial vertical movement, cunning and very vile enemies, the impossibility of characters escaping with impunity from a direct combat encounter, a variety of skills and tactical items, everything here is pleasing to the eye. Rare items of equipment and weapons in this game are really RARE, like in the legendary Witcher 3; when you find them, the path to which is usually very difficult and not obvious, you experience real joy, because this is a reward not for a stupid grind, but for overcoming difficulties, for your ingenuity. The global strategic part of the game is quite satisfying, developing your fort and legion quickly becomes an interesting activity, and fighting with opponents does not bother you. The only exception here is Act 3, where there is too much of everything. There are too many enemy forts, too many negative random events, when you literally cannot take a step so that you are not poisoned - killed by wild boars - fell off the bridge with critical injuries - fell on Nemesis, etc. This is very annoying and frustrating, especially considering that the Gallic act has quite a strong plot, and possibly the most hardcore turn-based combat encounters in the entire game. It's good that after that comes the most powerful final act, in which the global strategy retired, and only tactics come into play.

The expedition to Rome was a success. The epic decision of the fate of the world organically intertwined with small stories, respect for the established traditions of the genre was soldered with interesting ideas and innovations. This great game gives you the opportunity to make great achievements, give more Ancient Rome to all of us!
