Wanting Wings
To be honest: I played this game already before getting the steam copy. I read that there was a relationship dynamic where the cool flirty girl actually gets pushed down and is a total bottom. And she had long black hair? Say no more INSTANT BUY.
Cool girls who act confident .... Yes, I saw she has black hair (long black hair Im like Nomura). YEAH instant buy. I love this type of character dynamic: Cool girl(somewhat genre savvy..) X feminine girl. Tags: reversal, lets go!! Review Over.

Wanting Wings game and My thoughts
Wanting Wings on steam is divided into two games: Wanting Wings, the first game centered around Christmas and the sequel: Faraway Feathers, centered around Valentine's day. I replayed some parts of this game for the review and I will detail my thoughts and what I noticed in three categories while playing.

Basics:
  • This Visual novel is short, I already had the non steam managamer copy. I did play the game a little to see certain things again. I would say it's a 6-9 hour game. 1-1 ½ hours for each route. The game cost $34.99 though. I wouldn't get it unless it was on sale or you are a true fanatic based on price, length and content.

  • For the first game, Fumi and Rin route(Rin has black hair) is locked behind doing both of Hina’s pairings (The three main girls in the games names). The second game you can play any couple routes in any order just after each couple the sequential routes you play the details given about the true couples story are expanded and this unlocks the fourth couple after all three couples are read. I only wanted to do Fumi and Rin first though.
Art:
  • It is hard to miss unless you look enough but the art has a lot of problems. There are some anatomy problems, misdrawn hands and perspective issues in the cgs and sprites. The art is not offensively bad but once you notice you cannot unnoticed. I did not really see it until my second reading.

  • The character design outside of Rin. (It is hard to mess up long black haired girls; right?) The other characters' designs do not appeal to me at all. Hina’s haircut is ugly and so is the Sensei’s. Maybe I don't like girls with short hair but that old adult rat ass tail haircut is very vomit.

  • If you download the adult patch: The first game’s R 18 scenes are drawn okay but in the second game something happened there. They are bad. The first game's scenes were explicit but that has been replaced by lines. Very much a downgrade.

The story:
  • The first game deals with how the couples get together and the second game focuses on each couple’s relationship. Both games follow familiar story structures. If you see one couple's route you can guess how the other couple's story will follow.

  • The story is very easy to read and once you finish one route you can skip the “common” route and just get to the couple stories.

  • The story is not that deep and does have the typical anime jokes/interactions which you would probably expect from this type of VN. You are getting fluff here.

  • Hina is annoying and childish and her scenes just NO nothing does nothing for me at all. I am not a furry okay. She did get better in the second game but I can only see her as a cool friend.

  • A sexually harassing older adult is a major con and I hate that anime trope so much.

  • There is a supernatural element that makes the narration make sense and somewhat interesting.

  • I think the seconds game writing is better. I liked how the conflict was handled and it actually made me like the Hina and Fumi couple better. Sadly I think the Fumi and Rin’s story was weaker in the second game than the first.

  • The drama is handled swiftly and not drawn out. Everyone's conflict will get resolved and they will get a happy ending which is sweet but I cringed still because these types of love stories are too unrealistic. I am jaded now.. While they have conflict it is wrapped up too nicely in a way to make you feel good but if you think about it these couples will definitely have the same problems in the future again related to their insecurities that they did not solve. IT’S NOT THAT DEEP THOUGH.

  • The sexy scenes have overused euphemisms. It bothered me. I am not even playing for that.

  • Both games have a true ending but there is not really a canon couple other than the fourth couple so it is up to you to interpret which of the three couples are canon since the fourth couple in the final route scene implies you saw all of the couples route but does not tell you which one is confirmed. Kind of disappointing because we all know one it should be though (FumiXRin).

  • I loved all of Fumi and Rin’s interactions and so I was not disappointed in what I wanted to see. Fumi is a top. Too bad we really did not get to see the actual reversal happen. Still Rin is a great character too. She is funny and a cynic. We need that in these types of sweet/mushy stories.

Conclusion

This visual novel is a super sweet somewhat cheesy story. Yeah it is set during two holiday seasons known for romances. You know what you are gonna get is something lighthearted and amusing not anything thought provoking or serious. And not a character study either. I probably would not have gotten this game before if the FumiXRin dynamic was not in it. The other characters did not appeal to me visually and while the sequel of the game did make me like Hina it would not be enough for me to buy it. Nothing can beat that character pairing dynamic. The first half is superior for Fumi and Rin scenes and story and while the second half did better for the other routes, I think the Fumi and Rin story in the second game was weaker, but there were still some good moments. For normal people I am not sure I would recommend this game. It is very sweet and gooey. I closely relate this game to the Sono Hanabira games but this game does feel like a knock off. Even cheesy type fluffy stories like Sono Hanabira did better while I somewhat wanted to cringe with this game. I would play Sono Hanabira over this in general. But if you like anything about FumiXRin I would play or if any of the character designs interest you. Or perhaps you just want a yuri christmas story to read? It is giving Yuri hallmark.
EDIT: Yes i just realized I misspelled the name of the game in my review I genuinely thought it was waiting lol but everything else is accurate and how I feel about this game. Thank you for reading.
