My girlfriend said "I don't like the noise this game makes" and then it crashed. 10/10. If you ever wanted to experience last era's flash games with this era's dopamine addiction methods this is the game for you.

My favorite thing about Baldur's Gate 3, Breath of the Wild, Dragons Dogma 2, and Skyrim was picking a direction and exploring a world I could get lost in for awhile. Avowed absolutely delivers on this. It is a tightly packed with a pretty substantial amount of findables that are more interesting than the games I mentioned (perhaps besides BG3).

It does this in a fantasy RPG wrapper that is the best iteration of first person combat for games of this type I have played, and provides a range of decisions and outcomes that range from "sufficient" to "pretty good". If you are a major fan of how MANY routes you can take a story in a good CRPG, you may find Avowed wanting, but if you were left disappointed by other action RPGs that market their decision-driven game play in recent memory, you will likely be satisfied with what's available here.

This game has three major problems: The loot, the enemy variety, and the "living world" aspect.

The loot is really simple, think +15% shock damage, +elemental effect on heavy attack. The resource / upgrade system should have just been removed or changed. In contrast with the level-up skill system, which has very cheap respecs, you need to be certain about your weaponsets you upgrade, or you will need to melt down unique-quality weapons for upgrade materials to try a different route, or spend all your money on a new set of gear. It isn't game breaking, and generally it's fine, but it is a pain.

The enemy variety - there is a good amount of different types of enemies: bandits, sporeguys, bears, lizardfolk, etc. But they all typically fit into the RPG class hierarchy of wizard, summoner, knight, barbarian, priest, etc. Pretty much all of the enemy types have this same class hierarchy, so combat can get stale.

The "living world" - This will be a serious problem for people who are looking for their next Skyrim, as I will be forever. There doesn't appear to be any npc pathing, routines, routes. Let's say you want to kill a faction leader because you don't like the options available to you -- unless prompted via dialogue, you cannot do this. You cannot steal from NPCs, you won't get thrown in jail. There are no immersive storytelling due to the way your character interacts with the people, just immersive storytelling through dialogue and interactables, so if you were hoping for "sim" like aspects found in other RPGs, those are not here.

Overall, really incredible game. I think this should be the bar for future first-person combat RPGs and I am curious to see if and how competitors will respond now that we have a game like this with gameplay and combat qualities that are evolved to match some of the advancements we've seen in other genres. I am having a blast with the story, you are locked to a certain origin, and you are the "chosen One" in quite a few different ways, which could be offputting to some, but works well for the story they are telling here. I enjoy the dialogue and NPCs I have interacted with, some (Kai) more than others.

If you are at all a fan of this genre, and you are able to remove yourself from reading every critique and try the game out, I think you will find the fun Obsidian has put together for us here.

Arguably one of the most unique experiences you can get for an RPG, but it runs horribly. 75% of people won't be able to run this game above 25 fps.
