If you're unfamiliar with who, or what, Siren Head is, don't worry. The creature is a fairly new entity whose lore was only made public around 2018; its original creator being Canadian artist Trevor Henderson. The 40-foot tall monstrosity is mostly humanoid but its head is made out of a giant pole that has two massive broadcasting speakers attached to it, which it uses to emit anomalous sounds such as the Emergency Broadcast Signal; it has also been known to mimic human screams and conversations. If you're interested in knowing more, there's a wealth of information around the internet and on YouTube about this fascinating modern-day urban legend.

Siren Head: The Siren's Forest is a short, free, indie title that serves to expand the growing collection of Siren Head sightings and encounters. You're a guy who wakes up with a hangover, and who is still presumably somewhat drunk from the way he keeps stumbling around. For whatever reason you find yourself getting into your truck and driving away from your home, only to crash and wake up in a thick, creepy forest. It's not long before Siren Head starts pursuing you, and you must make your way through the maze-like area to have even a small hope of survival.

And that's basically what this game is... running. The developer did a good job using pre-established Siren Head traits, such as the ability to mimic screams and conversations, emitting the EBS, as well as modeling its physical features. However, this game is far from polished. The optimization is devastatingly poor, with framerates wildly flipping anywhere from the 20s all the way up to the 70s. There's no v-sync option, so screen tearing is a main 'feature'. Although it's good to keep in mind that this project was developed by a recent university graduate on most likely a $0 budget, it's worth noting that the graphics are severely dated; rivaling that of early PS3/X360 era releases.

The whole experience that Siren Head: The Siren's Forest has to offer can be completed in about 20 minutes. There's a lot of work that needs to be done here to make those 20 minutes feel worthwhile. Even the simple "look over your shoulder" mechanics are terribly executed and serve no purpose... in fact, using them might even get you killed since they veer your character off to the side and take forever to actually work. Additionally, both of the button mapping options for this say "left shoulder" in the options menu. For what it's worth, this wasn't a terrible idea, but the execution is just sloppy in every sense of the word.

Rating: 1.5/5.0 - It's Bad.
