"A Colony In Heat…"
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2574593941

Here’s The Thing:
You are Maria, waifu and CEO of LAB in the Red Colony- a terraforming effort for making Mars livable. Coming to in a warehouse, she wonders if she drank too much and blacked out after last night’s night? She starts reevaluating her life until she notices something else is afoot… something huge and veiny. Her family is unreachable since her phone can’t call or send messages. So, she decides to go strip and join in on the action~

! DISCLAIMER:
Red Colony But Hotter and Throbbing Than Ever!

I was totally inexperienced, having not played the friendlier version on the Switch. But here’s what I know of the differences; two new outfits “underwear” and “nude” Maria, many partially or fully exposed breasts and one brief graphic sex scene. Mostly the women have been modified to reflect aforementioned changes~

[+] PROS;

:) A LATE DEBRIEFING…
The gameplay is plain and minimalistic which I didn’t mind at all. As a 2D survival horror adventure- nothing really jumps out at you, but everything works fine. In fact, the formula is grasped almost rhythmically where you first learn the controls, scavenge for supplies, crawl on all fours under tables to avoid enemies! There are also 3D printers to save with the insanely finite USB sticks or for copying firearms and ammo.

Before you know it- a routine is formed where you must find a key, upgrade your keycard level of authorization, ride an elevator, show a zombie what for, find a fellow naked survivor and continue with the search for your daughter! But I wasn’t bored, on the contrary I was invested because of the fun, sassy story and exploration. What I absolutely couldn’t get enough of were the side-objectives where you could put someone down out of compassion, bitterness or just for the hell of it!

:) KEEP THE ROMANCE UNDEAD!
The premise, especially with the now torn garments is like Resident Evil, RE Apocalypse clashed with High School of The Dead! While it sets out to a shambling start, it kept improving and then outdid itself with a totally “did not see that coming” twist and homage to yet another survival horror franchise!

It’s supposed to be comical and well, I did find it so- in that amidst a zombie outbreak, people still have time to worry about their future love life and or getting one last hurrah in! Jokes and survivor cliches aside, there is a great deal of expounding on household problems.

:) DOING THEIR BREAST~
From a visual standpoint- RCU easily shines at its brightest. Models are stunning and the assets- terrific! Nothing like splaying brain matter and body fragments everywhere! What they lack in full animation and expressions, they make up for in scrappiness and setting an atmosphere of a bygone era in survival horror. From the closeup angles of Maria in cutaway-transitions of opening doors, climbing ladders, pulling oneself up to the playing of depth with background objects.

Or limited field of vision when you walk cautiously in dark, silent corridors. There are no straight up jump scares, but instead some startling events. Even sound design-wise, the forebodingly serious music fare quite well but are no match to the reverb of moody and grim sound effects.

:) THE REAL WORKING WOMEN OF-
The protagonist is gorgeous, intelligent and determined, seriously you can’t hate her! Unless you’re a working mother too… The b-movie dialogue, cussing and all-round bit*chiness in the script do hurt the drama’s delivery. But the laid-back manner seems like it’s how actual people talk. After all, it was trying to evoke the classic RE feel and gosh, remember how funny everything unintentionally was? I can’t help but picture the female perspectives were written by men~

[-] CONS;

:( SO EASY… TOO EASY.
As a whole, the game has one default difficulty if one can call it that. Puzzles are all restricted to four-digit combinations and are usually easily referenced either nearby or already on you. Combat-wise, you can simply finish using the standard knife and no health items ever gets used, I kid you not! Enemies’ small detection radius, no boss fight, nada! It’s not that big of an issue but I know it can be a grievance, so just putting it out there~

:( PUT THOSE AWAY AND WE’LL TALK~
The nudity doesn’t actually add anything worthwhile to the plot, except for maybe one revelation early on. With the rest being purely gratuitous and borderline exploitative, but not to the lengths of a H-game or endless, senseless moaning.

That said, the number of nips and uncontainable bosoms are distracting- taking away the gravitas of the characters’ plight! The ladies don’t even seem uncomfortable, like they don’t even realize they were taken advantage of or maybe Red Colony is also a nudist colony by night. But I suppose those were what people paid for~

:( HAPPY. ENDINGS…!
The final scene is upsetting but the shift to the scenario is so foolish. You just had to be there… So, Maria is sitting there, weapon in hand and it didn’t occur to her to use it at all and the NPCs are spectating, barely reacting. Very poorly put together and it seems that by then, the budget had run out. So, much or maybe even all of it went into the jiggling physics and appeal of the boobies.

BUGS:
x Some doors need to be entered twice because the transitions don’t properly load.
x Enemy gets caught in table, convulsing uncontrollably.
x Maria gets dragged back by hanging chandelier, despite being rather far from the obstacle.
x A door is closed forever because the already unlocked panel is stuck. Maria’s head phasing through said door.
x Keep receiving the same calls when backtracking.
x Box with shelter key on person forces softlock of inventory menu, even though the key inside it is already taken. Just press esc and don’t touch it anymore.
x Sound effects repeat when spamming the interact key and do not correspond to on-screen states.

NITPICKS:
~ NPCs have the same dialogue no matter how far along you are. For instance, after threatening to kill or grope. Talk to them again and it’ll be like meeting for the first time.
~ Conversations have no skip button.
~ Firearms are as good as useless.
~ Continuity error with fabric tears of character shots.
~ Mapping of controls and proper support for keyboard. I had to take a stab at what each did.
~ Fast travel gets unlocked AFTER getting everything the game has to offer.
~ Option to tone down or turn off nudity.

"The Sequel? Blue Ball Colony~"

Last Words?
RCU goes all out on nudity with new “clothes” but retains the rest. A job done well, but ridiculously tasteless. It got lucky, as its plot & average gameplay will more than seduce you for the sequel~

If you love an amateur Resident Evil feeling with a subpar plot that slowly unravels and strengthens in its development, Red Colony is ready for you! While this T&A version may cost $2 bucks more than its Nintendo counterpart, at least you can play it on Steam without buying a Switch. Unless you have one already; I’d still recommend this version because it packs an extra thing or should I say two things that will make you stay~

6.9 / 10

I'm beet red thanks to Runic Codes. Oh and also for the key ;)

@Two Clicks Yep, it's right in the middle. Play it if you're not looking for something too deep or developed as a survival horror.

If you are- then go to "Tormented Souls" or the classics~:gmh_gjh:

Sounds like a mixed bag. Not terrible but not enough to make me want to play it. I guess this was meant more for genre fans.

@AviaRa A little... yeah.

Still a good time though and it knows exactly what it is meant to be. Good campy fun with heaving breasts XD

I see. That's sad then.
DeadeGuard98 Aug 20, 2021 @ 2:42am
@AviaRa I doubt it will :' )

Get ironed out I mean, since the Switch version and the fact they have a sequel already.

They could make some tweaks- but that's about it. The combat system is far too embedded~ :edwin:
AviaRa Aug 20, 2021 @ 1:31am
Might be quite good once it will get ironed out.

@RuneStorm OMG hey, thanks for leaving a comment. That's pretty cool of you to think of it- once it's all polished, should be more enjoyable!:steamthumbsup:

Thanks again and yes I did~ :UDG_Heart:

Thank you for the review and score!
Bugs noted, and most of them appear when you backtrack yes... The backtrack mechanism was something I added last minute and didn't bug-test it enough I suppose :( Original idea was to ONLY move forward in the story and not allow the player to go back. :S anyway, glad you enjoyed it overall!
