Early Access Review
The game can be fun, but it has its issues that are never addressed by devs or even people who enjoy this game. I had my fair share of both enjoyment and annoyance and many rage quits in it.
Overall, as far as zombie games go, this game is great and replayable, but it is by no means "realistic". The premise of living corpses having level of cognition allowing them to hunt for humans is bonkers, but that is more of an issue with zombie movies after which the game is inspired.
The game however is not even that "in depth". The attention to detail in the gameplay varies and is seemingly arbitrary.
Then what exactly is wrong?
  • Combat is very janky and largely RNG-based. I would go as far as to say that it is not very skill-based either. Due to the stylistic choice of isometric view, effective combat requires you to be faced in a direction that allows you to accurately estimate the distance between the player and the enemy.
  • Player-built structures are useless. Zombies are attracted to anything built by a player and if just a few zombies find their way to your hut in the woods, it will be destroyed within seconds.
  • Brick walls and glass windows catch on fire.
  • The world despite being rather fleshed out, feels empty. Luckily this is going to be addressed in future builds.
  • Vanilla vehicles are lackluster. Despite military presence in the game, there is absolutely zero military vehicles available in the game. You have biker gangs, but no motorbikes. Fire departments with no firetrucks. I could go on, but the bottom line is - what would make sense to be in game, for some reason isn't in there.
  • Devs for years forced the idea of the game being the story of your death, and for that reason, did not do much for those, who manage to survive long-term.
  • The weapon degradation rate is a joke. According to the devs, firing 15 magazines from M16 is enough for the gun (which is military grade) to become completely useless. It basically means that I end up with more ammo than guns to shoot with.

I purposely avoided critique of features that can be simply changed using sandbox settings, which I recommend to anyone, who is not happy with the default settings. The sandbox settings exist for a reason and you should play as you feel comfortable with.
I am also fully aware that many of those issues can be fixed with mods but you can only go so far before mods start conflicting.
