Decent game, great setting, fun game play loop, but struggles with massive glaring balance issues. This has the potential to be an FPS main-stay but will wither in obscurity if these issues aren't addressed. To anyone looking for a competitive experience, do NOT waste your time. To those looking for a fun casual experience, feel free to enjoy and drop a few hours. P.S. The setting of the game is phenomenal but I'd really like it played up a bit more if possible. Maybe some light digestible lore or something instead of teasers for future battle passes.

PVP-Focused Perspective Review

The Destiny series has been Bungie's attempt at a themepark FPS-MMO and has firmly cemented Bungie's place as a storied powerhouse in the FPS genre.

So the review is more complete, I'm going to talk briefly about the content of Destiny outside of PVP. There is a great amount of content in this game, but significantly less compared to other modern MMO's like World of Warcraft. If you are a solo player wanting to get through all of the story, I estimate about 30-40 hours of gametime, which is nothing to scoff at, but certainly not as daunting a task as approaching other long-running MMO franchises. However, since some of the content is linked to group activities, and finding groups for these activities is often quite difficult, I would recommend skipping this content and trying to fill in the holes to the best of your ability. This short story is great for approaching the game as a new player, but I don't think it helps with the consumer's investment into the game. Often, people who play Destiny 2 become more invested in their guns than the characters, story, and environments of the game. If you are a player, like myself, who really enjoys a good, cohesive story, I heavily recommend skipping most of the story content in this game. As far as my critiques of the story go: the main story is quite basic and contrived in its premises, can sometimes be confusing or rely too heavily on Destiny 1 lore, has low impact and shallow characters, and, in conjunction with a world that feels like you're the only one doing anything, feels unsatisfying in its conclusions.

Briefly mentioned above is the need for groups to perform some story content like raids. This group content is Bungie's idea of an "end-game" after you've rode every ride at the themepark so to speak. Raids, in my mind, is Destiny's greatest weakness and worst content. Raids are quite boring and one-dimensional challenges. Ultimately, raid mechanics feel like mini-games and often detract from the most important part of a shooter... the shooting. Many are jumping puzzles, quizzes on timing, memory puzzles, or simple nuisances. Unfortunately, raids often need to be completed many times, which makes these simple puzzles become very annoying very fast. On top of this, the raid content is hard to find groups for and requires a good amount of time that, I imagine, most people don't appreciate.

So, if I don't like the story or end-game content of Destiny, why should anyone play it? Because Destiny 2 feels gooooood.

The gun-play is reminiscent of the crisp and polished guns that we saw in their flagship Halo series and has only improved through the addition of better depth of movement and added weapon "perks". Sometimes the enemies can be boring bullet-sponges, but in most cases they are quick-to-die heavy-hitters making the enemy to enemy target selection a challenge in its own right. Bungie does a fantastic job with the guns in Destiny 2 and each gun, even the less rare ones, feel unique in their own right - really give it some thought on how hard that would be, it makes you respect the developers much much more. Despite still having the same problems as Halo with some guns taking up 1/3 of the screen, I am positive that anyone picking up this game can find a special gun that they really personally enjoy (Mine are the Ros Lysis II and the Hush). As a bonus on top, once you have found your favorite gun, you can spend extra time trying to get one for every purpose imaginable thanks to the weapon perks that even further differentiate each gun's personal identity (Note: Some guns don't have different perks, but most do). I recommend you go through the game keeping this in mind, because often this grinding for the "holy grail gun" will supplant the more lackluster end-game that exists in this MMO.

If you are strictly looking for a PVP experience in Destiny 2, you are not going to enjoy the game. Everyone coming to Destiny 2 PVP should know that they are coming in weaker than most opponents, but have a fire in their belly telling them that they want to improve. If you have that drive and passion to improve your loadout, then you will really truly love PVP in Destiny 2. That drive and passion carries us through the more-bland PVE content. A game like Destiny 2 is the perfect playground for goal-oriented individuals that set their sights on something and won't let it leave until it is achieved. Striving for a perfect loadout and dumpstering kids when you achieve it is a feeling unlike any other in the FPS genre. Taking your perfect guns into PVP, in my mind, is the true end-game content. Nothing is more satisfying than experiencing first-hand the added pop-off potential that only your min-maxed holy grail gun can provide. Here are some quick tips that I wish someone had told me:
- Headshots only. Headshot hitboxes are the size of Texas, so abuse it.
- You can't 1v2 in a game like Destiny 2. Don't try.
- Remember that you can't play every weapon the same, don't peak corners with a sniper or maintain distance with a shotty.

Now I'm going to mention the purple elephant in the room, the "PVP Meta". Never in all my hours of playing FPS games, have I seen such a toxic meta develop in an FPS game. Once a gun is deemed OP, the gun is suddenly ubiquitous among the player base and in every PVP game. There are some people that enjoy this and some that don't. If you are of the opinion that you do not enjoy this, use this aspect of the game as a drive to prove yourself. I took a bow all the way to the highest PVP rank in this game, you can do the same. MMO players min-max by nature so metas are bound to develop and the "optimal" weapon will always be found, BUT most guns in the game are still highly competitive in time to kill and if you work at maximizing the strengths of the weapon you enjoy, you can outperform 99% of the player base. I love this about Destiny 2

tl;dr If you are a PVP player that occasionally enjoys a little looting and min-maxing goal-oriented gameplay, you will absolutely adore this game. If you only want PVP, look to other games more focused on that like TF2, Valorant, or Overwatch.

As a person who has clocked over 1000 hours in tf2 I have seen this game evolve, first hand, from an interesting First Person Shooter with unique classes and play styles into the crazy game full of shiny guns, flamboyant hats, and lots of hilarious redundancy that the game has become over these 7 years. This FPS beautifully blends the casual and competative community, more for the benefit of players as a whole. Unlike Counter Strike or other famous FPS titles, TF2 primarily relies on user skill, but , unlike some of these games, avoids repudiating their casual players by creating "counters" to specific classes and elements like random critical hits to somewhat crutch the newer players as well as creating an environment of crazy explosions, gib, and flying bodies that no one could deny enjoying being a part of. Along with these important details, the dedicated and enjoyable community, game-breaking weapons, and nuances-a-plenty to master keep the gamer coming back and never recieving the same experience.

Tl;dr: This game sucks.
