While it's not going to win any awards for gameplay innovation, and the writing in the opening two missions is a bit clunky, like anyone familiar with the history of this game's development I'm honestly glad it got made at all.

For all that, there's a very fun core combat loop here, with a good pruning of the administrative busywork of prior games making it more action-packed. The story is good, and specific themes of identity and self-confidence are woven through most of the arcs, making the writing feel intentional. The lore reveals are a must-have for long time Dragon Age fans.

Another good entry in the series, with an interesting new take on campaign mechanics. CA are still a bit focused on waterfall-style development though.

In short: a great game, now that it's been patched. The provinces system makes cities *so* much easier to run than before, the battles are good (though short, they feel longer) and do reward you for using units cleverly, the mods provide infinite flexibility. But it doesn't have quite the same emotional feel as the original Rome.
