Early Access Review
REDEGADE: ARENA SHOOTER (RAS) is an Early Access that wants to be a classic arena fps with hero shooter elements, but falls flat on all the marks! So what are you getting for $10? Disappointment. RAS tends to flub the most important aspects of what a good FPS game needs, and I will tell you what it's doing wrong.

Starting with, settings. The game is running on the Unreal Engine, so the settings are pretty decent in terms of what can be changed. There is lacking a FOV slider, but from what I have played, the FOV is passable. I thankfully did not get motion sick. There is a slight motion blur though, that can't be turned off.

So what's offered in this EA game? Single-player and Multiplayer (which is dead). In Single-player, there is only 1 game mode available, which is "Simulation" or is basically quick action. The campaign, invasion, and survival modes are greyed out in the menu. In simulation mode, there are only two choices, Face Off (Deathmatch) or Team Brawl (TDM). Simple enough, except you only have 3 MAPS!! 2 tiny maps, and 1 huge map for the TDM. These maps are junk. There is no creativity in them and no actual thought was put into them. The first map is just crates in a square room, with a small building in the middle. The second map is a bunch of pipes and such, with basically no cover. The only big map, which is based in a Hanger of some kind, is just horrendous to look at. Little to no cover in it, cause the game to run slow, and it's hard to see any enemies on the map.

RAS is broken up into 2 factions. The Renegade Robots, and the Mercenary Humans. This isn't just a cosmetic difference either. Depending on which you pick, there are some big differences. For starters, the Mercenary Humans have a slow movement speed, barely jump, and have more realistic-looking weapons. The Renegade Robots, on the other hand, move faster, jump higher, AND HAVE DOUBLE JUMP! Does that sound unfair? Yes, it is. The only real downside of the robots is their movement makes a ton of noise. Speaking of the noise, the sounds in this game are terrible. Not only does everything sound bad, but the sound locations are just junk! Nothing like getting shot from your right, but the sound is like YOU are shooting, so you have no idea where anyone is, and there is no hit feedback telling you what direction you are getting hit from.

The absolute most important thing about any FPS game however is the weapons. These guns are bad! There is a total of 7 weapons (5 primary and 2 secondary). Each faction has a different look, but each are the same. Assault Rifle, Scout Rifle, Machine Gun, Sniper Rifle, Shotgun, Pistol, and Revolver. All of these guns have zero reloads. Every gun is "energy" based, so they all recharge instead of a reload. All weapons are also HITSCAN, meaning there are no projectiles. Trying to hipfire any of the weapons is an absolute joke. It's not from recoil, the weapons have almost zero recoil. You can't tell if your shots actually hit anything as there is zero feedback other than a hitmarker +. That is the only way you know if you hit anything. There is a grenade, but it's so hard to kill anything as the blast radius is not consistent. Some weapons don't even have sounds! The biggest offender though is the Sniper Rifle, that CAN'T KILL ANYTHING WITH 1 HEADSHOT! It takes 2 headshots to kill anyone... Unless you are a bot, then they can magically kill you with one shot with the sniper rifle.

The Bots in this game are cheaters and dumb as bricks. How? Well starting with the fact that you can't tell where you are being shot from, they tend to stand around and can shoot you from anywhere with every weapon. The spawn points on the map are also garbage, so expect to have enemies respawn right in front of you, or right behind you. The biggest thing though that makes the bots cheaters is they can shoot and hit you without actually looking in your direction, but even when you KILL them, they can still shoot and hit you while their ragdoll corpse is on the ground! So yeah in case you can't figure it out, this game is not worth it. Do not buy! Thankfully I got it from a bundle for cheap.

Thanks for the feedback! Finally someone stepped forwards and put down something we can work with to turn this prototype into a fully fledged shooter!

As stated on the store page, the mapping does take up most of the time, being the one and only developer does require me to make use of assets that serve as placeholders. I never had FPS drops on the Hangar map, then again, never had a larger audience to test it. Thanks for the input!

The majority of the game modes are grayed out for the obvious reason. Still under development Thus is the very nature of a game in "early access" and doesn't always come with everything from the start.

Yes, the factions are unbalanced and require a lot of fine tuning. A lot seems like an understatement, right? As for the sounds, not gonna lie, I screwed up there and it was always a problem since the beginning! There was a time the sound sliders and wouldn't even change the volume at all! Imagine those times, haha.

Yup, the weapons are a WIP and their ammo pool is separated in the latest (not uploaded to Steam) build. Initially, Renegade wasn't going to feature 2 factions, not even a class system if you will. But surprise surprise!

The AI requires a lot of tweaking. Before they were dumb. Now they are dumb and cheating too! But they are in a better, yet silly, state as opposed to before.

Once again, thanks for your feedback and hope you will reconsider the day the game changes from prototype to a fully fledged shooter. Which essentially required people to test it as opposed to writing it off.

@LMFAO (Dev) - Thank you for taking the time to read my impression of your game! Glad to hear I was of some help with giving feedback. I know my review might seem harsh, but the fact you read and responded to it gives me a lot more respect for you! Please don't give up, and work hard at it! I'll happily check out your game again if you can improve and add more to it!
