The very first thing you may notice about this game is the unique style, sketchier and darker than other games of similar genre I have seen, yet still pronounced and very easy to recognize. As you play the actual game, though, you begin to see the complexity through the little details from your hunger and health to the spoilage of food, range of temperature, and changing of seasons and weather among many other things. Simply put, if you go in just expecting a little fun and easy survival challenge, you may find the whole world of Don't Starve opening up and encapsulating your interests with its subtle hints of folklore and storytelling.

In my personal opinion, loving story and complexity to said tale, I think Don't Starve is an amazing game that has captured my interests moreso than any other recent game titles I have played. Of course, this game is not for everyone. This is one of those games that drops you in with the only hint that too is the title of the game, don't starve. If you have no clue or introduction, it can be difficult to figure out how to survive, as there are no clues as you play, but you can decide with what you are given to do most anything. This includes modifying your world to the difficulty or ease you please, but if you want to participate in the story more thoroughly, I recommend trying out the Adventure Mode, but this you cannot modify as it is randomly generated.

I won't give any spoilers to the elusive story or specifics of the game, but something to the charm of this game is the characters themselves. Each has their own unique design, strengths, weaknessess, abilities, and personalities. Most of these unlock with experience you gain from either dying or escaping your world ( details excluded), but some are Reign of Giants exclusive and require certain actions to be taken to unlock. I still must say that without these characters and their diversity, it would take away so much from the experience. The community, too, has made some phenominal mods for the game, including characters, and I say go and give 'em some love as they make this game even more enjoyable.

Something else that plays an important role is the music, or lack thereof. At times you feel helpless and alone, wandering this strange land uncertain of what to do or where to go, and other times you may be picking flowers to the happy tunes of day and relax as pronounced notes finally signal the end of a dreadful night. While sometimes non-existant, I find that whenever the music plays I become even more caught up in the soul and feel of the game.

Overall, I recommend this game for its uniqueness of style and play, development of environment, character, and story, and for the community Don't Starve has created that I am proud to be a part of.

Thank you very much for reading my review!
