This game keeps the core concepts intact from the XCom series, but it abstracts away all the less fun stuff which IMHO is a good thing..

This game also reduces cheese potential by only giving you one of each unit type, so you can't make some 1x Ranger and 5x Sniper teams like you could in the remakes. I also consider this to be an improvement.

There are many more unit types in this game, and you have to make meaningful choices in hiring. Both of those I consider improvements compared to hiring 10x units and then picking the best two and firing the rest again which is more the model of the older versions.

This game also keeps the essence of the older game terror missions intact by giving you bonuses for moving over to non-combatants which makes the tactical movement more interesting. Usually, you won't be able to have great cover while also rescuing non-combatants. Higher risk, higher reward options are good for gameplay, IMHO.

The only thing that I would consider a step backward from previous titles, and it only applies to the remakes, is the "in base communication with other key players" layer. I imagine that adding high end 3d graphics for this portion would have greatly increased the costs of this game and would have greatly delayed the ship date. On those grounds, I am willing to accept this step back. This game is much cheaper than the previous titles, so I do expect the game makers to have to cut costs somewhere. IMHO, this is a fine place to do it.

If you want better gameplay and worse graphics, take this version. If you want better graphics and worse gameplay, stick with the older remakes.

Pure tactics and little strategy inside missions. Pretty good RPG elements outside of battle, just don't look for much interesting stuff outside of battle because not much is. Good game, though, like a melee version of XCom.
