They look similar to garden gnomes in terms of how they dress; garden gnomes must be based on old accounts of others who saw them too. Anyway, they're alive and well; most people just can't see them due to limited perception I suppose. Gnomes are examples of “elementals”. They are earth-based beings. The other three types of elementals are undines (water), sylphs (air), and salamanders (fire). The only types that I have seen are gnomes and salamanders, a few years ago. To date, I have seen too many gnomes to count, ~20 dwarves, 1 giant, and other beings that do not fit into these categories (Fairies, Ents, and other Astral summons).
