I think it's best to look at this game the same way the Devs told us in a steam post after a year of complete radio silence. To "only purchase Bonelab as it currently is and not based on what it may be." So, let's look at what that means.
BONELAB is the sequel to BONEWORKS, but it feels more like version 1.2 of BONEWORKS. Not much has changed from the core gameplay, you run around with Janky physics, shoot some guns and whack enemies with melee weapons. But there’s a few key changes. For starters, the game has a greater focus on modding support, with tools available to create your own avatars… and that’s it. They never finished the SDK and creators have had to rely on third party updates to the SDK other script mods.
BONELAB has no native multiplayer despite having modding support, which kills half the fun of having a game with mods, goofing around with friends. Players have had to rely on mods like Fusion to be able to play together.
The Loading Screens in this game are the worst aspect by far. Even with an RTX 3070, I’m stuck in Loading screen that are 5 minutes minimum and can go on for as long as 7 minutes, maxing out my CPU, causing other applications to crash and maybe even the game itself.
The new features in this game are Shotguns, Worse climbing mechanics, Vehicles, and the Bodylog, with which you can store up to 6 avatars in to change to on the fly.
The campaign itself is also incredibly short and dull. The first half has you running around in regular stages, and then the second half involves running around lame challenges that attempt to fit some use you’ll get out of that current avatar, like Tall being good for climbing or heavy being good for powerful melee combat. Then at the end of the game you’re told that mods exist and are escorted back to the title screen.
You unlock up to 6 more avatars as you progress through the game, except most of them are completely useless.
I’ll use the most popular example first; Short. Short is, true to the name, small. He’s only useful in the 2-3 sections of the campaign where you must squeeze through small vents, and the level where you unlock him is just a sandbox level with a button hidden in it that you must press. I played this level at launch and the map was put in such a stupid place that I missed it and spent 45 minutes looking around the whole level trying to find a single button (but don’t worry, the Devs fixed it by adding an indicator where the button is), except they completely forgot to make the level fit towards Short’s ability to be small. So it’s just a regular level that takes 3 times as long because of how slow you move.
And then there’s Light. She has no special abilities, instead she moves slower, jumps lower and has much less health so dies a lot quicker. The developers decided her introductory level should be a go-kart track. Once again, you can clear this level with any character so it doesn’t give you any reason to play as light unless you really like Anime girls.
The developers promised 2 years of support for this game. It’s currently 2024 and we’ve had two patches adding one new gun and keycard readers to every level that unlock… stuff. After a year of complete radio silence from the Devs we got an anniversary post showcasing leg tracking that looks the exact same as the existing leg tracking and nothing else. And so far, there’s been no updates since.
So… when you look at this game for what it is, and not what it isn’t, there’s barely anything in the base game that BONEWORKS doesn’t do much better. So… I’d say just buy BONEWORKS.

What once was a decently fun smash bros alternative quickly became stale with a lack of content and slow release of new characters.

Now the game's back with Micro transactions in tow. The UI just feels like they saw Fortnite's trash new UI and said "lemme just copy this real quick".
New characters cost double the amount of in-game currency to buy than other characters, and the game is flooded with FOMO mini events that get you to play constantly or else lose the chance to earn skins for some characters. Or you can just spend 21.99 to get a bundle of several character skins and in-game currency to speed up the grind.
Man, what happened to this game.

A rather unique sandbox experience to say the least.
Unfortunately the servers have shut down now, Sad to see them go.
I enjoyed my time here, but alas, all good things must come to an end.
