I've noticed a couple of different things about the necron which make late game a pain in the rear to achieve. First, you need to secure as many local points as possible to maximize build speeds. Necrpn build and train slow, so it is easy for factions like Imperial Guard or Tyranids to easily outpopulate them military wise.
Second, you need to determine if you're going for a hero build or a titan build. It's possible to do both, yes, but focusing on one helps conserve resources against a player or AI which really is hammering on you.
The necron heroes are pretty op when substantially upgraded, capable of inflicting massive pain against infantry builds, and good at keeping large single targets slowed and incapacitated. Backed by some immortals (recently buffed with some nice damage I might add) the Necron heroes are the ultimate tanks againsts Tier 3 and lowers builds for the most part.
If you plan on going with the titan build, keep in mind that while titans pack a punch for the necron, they move slow, are easily surrounded, and have some pretty obvious counters. Imperial Guard have their Stormsword and Assassins. Eldar has 100% accuracy, so their anti vehicle can really wreck you en masse, plus they have freaking Anti-armor and Anti-Structure infantry know as Wingsuits. I swear were specifically introduced for the sole purpose of rage inducement, since when properly equipped can micro like no other and can handle infantry just as easily as their intended target types.
Sorry, sidetracked...
If you go titans, make sure you have infantry backup. All build times and infantry train times are determined by how many points you have, so late game try to be at 100%, or as close to it as possible in early game. Make sure you tech up power and keep the generators alive as well, and that you don't have multiple squads of scarabs building on structure. I've found that more than one squad does not increase build times at all, so it's better to build multiple things at once.
Turrets are your best friend. If you know they are going to rush you, make a turret or two near a resource point. The resource point can hold its own against a small group, but extra turrets provide the neccesary firepower to hold off a sustained push. As long as the opposition ignores your scarabs, you can repair them when needed. A single squad of necron warriors with their first upgrade is also scary to find camping a point, so keep that in mind.
So for a step by step build guide I use:
Step one: Autobuild scarabs, they're freaking free to build and reinforce. Immediately build up your power generators which one scarab on each one. Keep 3 squads of scarabs out to cap and build towers on points, and build turrets near soon-to-be attacked points. Keep teching up your energy as well! Mass amounts of never-depleting generators won't amount to much unless you tech them up a bit for more production!
Step 2: Build another main structure. OR 5! In order to compensate for the universally slower build times of other races, you need to compensate by having more unit building structures. At the same time, this allows for easy titan builds you can throw into the fray to wreak havoc, or even just to buy you time. Since necron literally build their own Relic resources, you can have significant number of them out their. They can't be destroyed while active too, so you can just keep a contingent of scarabs at home base to repair damaged titans that automatically teleport home at critical damage and send em out again in a matter of minutes.
Step 3: Use your abilities! ESPECIALLY GLOBALS! Necron are slow. Necron are fairly tanky. Necron are a very hard zerg to stop without super weapons, and even then their structures are "resistant" to super weapons. If you lose momentum, you'll have a hard time building it up again. So have your heroes or energy pylons cast "Resurrect" "Take Control" or whatever to even a fight that looks to tough. Imperial Guard especially hate "Take control". Tanks are their life, and you just took it from them.
A few tips:
Tip 1: Backdoor! Did you know you can drop in titans where you have line of sight? Did you know the Necron Overseer has an ability which allows him to become invisible, invulnerable, and move at the freaking speed of light? No? Well guess what? Pop that sucker on, you can waltz into their base, drop a titan or two, then waltz out before it ends if you micro well enough.
Tip 2: Know which units are good against what. You don't send necron warriors against baneblades obviously, and scarabs, while useless in direct combat, are great at mowing down single targets who can't fight back well. Know their weaknesses and strengths, and know which ones are currently op and broken as all hell. Like Heavy Destroyers, those unkillable, population glitching DPS monsters....
Tip 3: Eldar are your worst enemy. They have speed. They have accuracy, and they have units which get bonus damage againts "Living Metal". They have invisibility, they have have speed, they have flying units, they have speed, they have OP Morale Shields, they have speed.
Did I mention they have speed?
Your best bet is to do everything you can to get out a standing army and a small defense on forward resource points, because eldar are fast little guys, and they WILL rush you as necron, and they will crush you without infantry.
I probably missed a ton of stuff, but hey, this is better than nothing I hope, hopefully the emperor see's you fit to survive the coming onslaught of the imperium of man.
This is Tekk42, leader of the Imperial Guard Blood Legion Armored Brigade, signing off.
For anyone who skipped to the bottom for the TL:DR, IT'S A STRATEGY SUGGESTION/GUIDE WHICH I HAVE NO WISH TO SUMMARIZE FOR LAZY PEOPLE! Go die in a fire please. The Emperor hates you.
