FAQ updated - Drop limits & Dota 2
We've updated the Trading Card FAQ with more information about drop limits and card drops in Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2. See "How can I get trading cards?", "Is there a limit to how many trading cards can drop?", and "What about free to play games like Team Fortress 2 or Dota 2?".

Please leave any feedback you have here.

They really need to change this. This is so stupid for people who actually play the games and NEVER buy anything. I have put in many hours into TF2 and have never bought anything and still will never buy anything. So buy their logic I don't deserve these cards? Especially when I paid money to play this game back in 2007, before the F2P model.

In short, they need to figure out a different way to give gamers these cards for the F2P games.

It makes sense that the card drops don't reset. Otherwise you could just give all your cards to a smurf account, get more cards, give more to smurf account, repeat, repeat.

Though without card drops resetting I don't understand how people are suppose to make all 6 badges and level them up without spending money.

If you purchase TF2 before F2P you already should have premium account.

Thanks a lot Valve, this is the best thing Steam could feature.

Can't say I like this system as it's looking now.

I personally think that they at least need to reset the counters as soon as you crafted one badge of the game. To get you started. This way you have a constant flow of cards going in.
To counteract that they could lower the drop rates (I received 3 of my 4 drops in just one hour of playing HL2).

I don't like the idea that I have to pay for more cards... I am paying for steam games and when they are available on Steam I buy them here, because it is my platform of choice.

Please, Valve, restructure this system and make the Steam Level what it should be: Show how much time you spent on Steam playing games not how much money you spent on vanity items.

This! A million times this.

And if you HAVE to tie card drops into actual Steam purchases, please consider at least including ALL Steam purchases, instead of just the ones you make inside a specific game. Seriously, 10$ spent on Steam games and you get an extra card drop on ALL your games that have droppable cards? That seems a lot better. It's not ideal (again, not really much FUN, is it), but it's not as horrible as the current system.

Pay2Badge.

Sadly this is reality. With no drop resets at all, Valve expects people to buy cards from the Market.

Pay2Badge.

And pay for freaking EMOTICONS. I mean seriously, not even EA has managed to think of something that restrictive to a feature that should be available to everyone to liven up these discussion boards.

Cards drop each 20 mins for now. But model is bad. There is many alternate model out there.Forexample, drop rate should be longer but no drop limit. So you'll get card as much as you play or there might be a card drop chance when you do specific actions in game, etc....

They only need to think. It is not hard to find better model!

Both of those ideas are awful.

1. If you can get cards for as long as you play, let me just run half life 2 on 20 alts and crash the value of the cards by undercutting everyone else on the market.

2. You can't make a card drop when you do specific things unless it's tied to an achievement. Not to mention, many devs don't want to modify their games to accommodate the trading card system.

The system set in place seems strict, but overall it's to make sure that the cards don't become worthless pieces of garbage that no one wants. That'd defeat the purpose of having them at all.

I think the system would work best like this;

Purchases of $9 or more get you access to the four normal card drops that P2P players get. $9 is still worth more than any four cards you could sell from Dota 2 and TF2, and it evens the playing field. F2Ps can't get more cards than P2Ps, and F2Ps won't get shafted and have to pay $36 to get the same amount of cards as a P2P.

One thing to note is you can use an emote and then sell it. :csgoskull:

Sounds fair to me. Will prevent multiple account farming.

How does it prevent multiple account farming?
If i want a tf2 badge and i don't play any of the other games, this system will encourage me to make 9 additional accounts, get the card drops, transfer them all to my main account, and craft the badge...

This system is forcing people to spend money as much as TF2 hats are forcing them to spend money. In other words, not at all. How is that? Because not everyone cares about hats or badges at all.

I've sold my HL2/Dota2 cards, bought what I needed to complete TF2 badge, then sold emoticon and background and had 4 € in wallet (of zero I started with) to purchase a game, or even more cards/items.

Am I sad that I'm not going to be able to craft lvl5 DOTA2 badge? Yeah, right, don't make me laugh... I've been speaking to at least 10 friends who don't care for cards or badges at all.

You keep mentioning cards being worthless if it was timed, and you could just set up a bunch of alt accounts to crash the market, however if you read the update post, valve presents it so that this badge system should reflect a steam users game preferences (i.e. I play a lot of TF2, so my profile should have a lot of TF2 stuff). Valve also makes it seem like getting cards should be a system including card trading, not spending money on this. Cards should not become a form of currency, it should be a way of customizing your profile and showing which games you like...

The steam levels have nothing to do with how much time you spend on playing games, the only thing the steam level is related to, is how much money.

:sentry: i hate this system because it's more about how much money you have as opposed to how much time/dedication you have to the individual games.

Actually you're wrong in your first statement, let's assume a person cares a lot about tf2 hats, he can get every single unique hat (not counting promotions or unusuals) by just playing the game, sure it will take him a long time, but it's possible to get done.
The cards however are very different, let's assume I love Half LIfe 2, complete it every week because I love that game so much, I'm still only going to be able to get 4 out of the 40 cards required for a level 5 badge. But let's for the sake of arguing say that I don't mind installing a few F2P games that have cards, to get a few more cards for trading, 5 from tf2 4 from dota 2.
Trough a series of 1:1 trades I know have 13 HL2 cards out of the 40 i need, good start right?

Here's the problem, from this point on I'm forced to either spend money on the market place, or buy games I might not be interested in to get more cards. Most people that are willing to do this want their profile to reflect their love for HL2 in as many ways as possible, backgrounds and emoticons, however once again for the sake of arguing, let's say I ONLY want the badge. I sell whatever I get for a total of 4€ buy more HL2 cards at the low price of 0.50€ each. that's 8 more cards, a new badge, sell whatever I get for another 2€ buy four more cards, so trough the market place i now have 24 out of the 40 cards.

This is ofcourse only if I get decent crafts while crafting my trading cards, and if I find cheap cards on the market. The remaining 16 cards force me to either buy games I might not care about, or buy cards directly from the marketplace.

Also... this system will in no way reflect how much time or dedication this user has to HL2, He has played HL2 for 1½ hours, and the rest of the cards have been earning installing other games, playing other games, trading on the market place. This system is NOT representative of how much time or dedication the users has to the individual games.

Now this is only if a person cares about nothing but the badge for a single game. I personally really want some goodies from all the current games except for deon't starve, and I'm not the only person out there who wants several badges.
