Total mutism

Total mutism is the complete absence of spoken language. The individual does not speak, though the capacity for speech may remain intact. It may arise from psychological, neurological, or emotional causes, and its nature differs greatly from one person to another.

In such cases, silence is not merely the absence of conversation. It becomes a state of being; a distance between thought and expression, where words exist but are never spoken.
