@Jerry: I have put 300+ hours into SH:A and it was my first perfect game. I'm glad they were able to work out all the bugs. But sadly, it seems like it wasn't soon enough to save Full Control Studios.
Some TB games i love:
Original Jagged Alliance series
original XCOM
XCOM EW & EU
Original Fallout series / Tactics
MOO and MOO2
MOM
Warhammer Chaos Gate
Civ series (mostly V)
Mechcommander (although this was RTS with pause)
and some newer games i enjoy:
Age of Wonders III
Shadowrun series (Dragonfall, Returns & Hongkong)
Space Hulk: Ascension
I just bought Age of Decadence and hope to test drive it over the holidays.
Feel free to ask anything or add me!
Happy gaming!
I'm 29, live in England and love most game types, but TB games are among my all time favourites - I got started on Ultima V back when I was about 6, and not stopped moving through TB games since.
My family and I are also very much into board-games (even to the extent of creating our own that we play most times the family is together) and the structure similarity between TB computer games and many board-games is a big thing.
i've played a lt o TB games in my time, ranging from XCOM: Apocalypse right up to the modern day ones.
I'm very much into RE:IS, and recommend giving it a look at if you haven't - it's got both tactical and strategic elements, a great replayability and lovely atmosphere, both in-game and in the forums - one of the friendliest gaming communities I know of. (Plus I've had a hand in a lot of the community-challenges)
Other current games I''m very much into include: Total War: Warhammer and XCOM 2 (which I also play around with modding, though not finished any to my satisfaction yet, and not updated or played so much since the latest DLC as haven't had the time), Magic the Gathering (various games, more because I played the MtG somewhat when younger than because I'd recommend them as games), Darkest Dungeon (Lovecraftian TB combat semi-Roguelike) - great for Poe or Lovecraft fans.
Ones you may not have heard of, but which I have very much enjoyed: Steamworld Heist - tactical TB combat in the Steamworld series, Invisible, Inc (excellent Klei game, cyberpunk espionage/action game), and ADOM (Advanced Domains Of Mystery) - extremely in-depth and extremely punishing turn-based roguelike and, another like ADOM, Caves of Qud.
Other games which I'd call hybrid-turn-based would include: Shadowrun (Returns+Dragonfall+Hong Kong), Baldur's Gate 1,2+DLC, Fallout 1+2 and Wasteland 2. I think of them as hybrid TB as athough they aren't turn-based as such, you can play them a little like they were with rapid time-freezes and command issueing. and to succeed in them, you need to do so, to a degree.
Over the years I've diversified a bit but I've always gone back to Turn Based games. I've tried dabbling in RTS but as a rule I much prefer taking my time.
I'm also a huge fan of the original Fallout which is still my favourite game although it's been almost twenty years (but who's counting?) and I still play old isometric games like Arcanum, BG, IWD and a few others.
I usually have strong opinions about games and I miss the old days when I did have the time to complete the games I owned.
I have a certain fondness for indie games that usually don't get much love from mainstream reviewers, games that have heart and ambition like for instance games made by Spiders Studios (I had a great time with the Technomancer) and end up surprising you because they're not afraid of taking chances.
I've just finished playing Tyranny and I've decided that I should actually go through Pillars of Eternity and Xcom 2 before Battle Brothers comes out but there is very little chance of that actually happening.
I've also been meaning to play more of Legends of Eisenwald and a few other games like Expeditions Conquistadors or Lords of Xulima which I've been meaning to play for quite some time now so as you can see there is a definite pattern.
Also need to finish that one sometime. Only reason I hadn't was cause my main save hit a major bug that broke the save. Fortuantely, that's been resolved now, but I'll still have to start over.
Love the Civs and started with Civ2, don't have Civ6 yet, but play Civ5.
Really just got back into gaming maybe 5 years ago. On a Mac so I am somewhat limited.
Invisible, Inc. is a favorite, went through XCom 2 once already - what a great game. Playing Divinity Original Sin EE now, which has turn based combat.
I'm also a soccer/football nut so I play a lot of Football Manager.
Thanks for the group and all of the recommendations as they will greatly influence what I purchase in the future.
Cheers.
