Well if you actually do have EFI and want to use an unmodified installer, you should look at your bios to verify that the efi is enabled, and furthermore that it is enabled for non windows os's.

It is my understanding that currently the lucky 300 are only testing the controller in legacy mode as a sort of mouse and keyboard emulator. In the most recent blogpost Valve mentions making the steam controller api available to developers, so soon many games will be updated to offer full steam controller support (which should include the ability to use the pads like analogue sticks). At the moment I don't think there is a way for the steam controller to emulate an xbox 360 controller for the games which only support xinput, but making such a tool is relatively easy. If valve's configurator doesn't include this function when the controller is publicly available it won't be long before a third party tool is available for this function.

edit: forgot to mention that you also wrote a very nice and informative review. Its interesting you described the controller as the console's achilles heel, because that is what I am actually most excited about. Daisywheel (the typing system) does take a little getting used to but in my opinion it is so much better than the classic [use the analog sticks or dpad to move across a virtual keyboard] system that other consoles use. Having every letter accessible with 2 button presses lets me type so much faster.

While the fps certainly hasn't jumped for me, the increase has been measurable. I've also found the fps to be a more consistent on SteamOS. On Windows 7 Dota 2 ran on max settings with a fps that fluxuated between 55 and 60, and a few momentary spurts as low as 40 when lots of particles appear on the screen. On SteamOS, using the same settings, the fps was a pretty locked 60-61, and seem to only spurt down to 50 with lots of particles. Some of the increase can probably be attributed to windows background processes and such; I'll have to try putting SteamOS against something like Ubuntu to truly test valve's improvements. I'll also have to download more games than just Dota hehe

This is a very early test and very far from a final product. If you do not have the proper hardware or enough knowledge of the software to build a workaround, you probably shouldn't attempt to be in this testing phase. This version of the OS was designed specifically for the 300 beta steammachines that shipped out, and a more general and consumer friendly version of steamOS will be available soon.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that they are working on it, have patience.

First of all let me say CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! I, and I'm sure a good percentage of the people here, have already installed the OS on a custom machine. So at this point the controller is actually what I am most curious about. After you familiarize yourself with the controller, maybe in a couple days or so, I would like to see you play a couple different games with a mouse and keyboard, the xbox 360 controller, and the steam controller and do a comparison. Also I'm not sure what software is currently available for binding the controller, but if possible show the trackpads emulating analogue sticks as well as using the 1:1 mouse movements.

Does having the trackpad in 1:1 mouse mode allow you to aim more accurately than in an analogue stick (velocity based might be the correct term) mode? Is using the 1:1 mode more tiring/straining on your thumbs? I'm assuming the answer to both these questions is 'yes', but I guess what I'm really asking is 'to what extent?'.

Also I would appreciate it if you described the haptic feedback in great detail. That is probably the most difficult thing to understand without being able to feel it in person. Is the haptic feedback used in legacy mode or does each game need to have haptic support? To what extent are the directional haptics better than a simple rumble?
