Steam OS is currently dead. Use a different distro.

Steam OS development is dormant and very outdated.

I suggest using Gamer OS or another distribution.

SteamOS is just steam for linux. it should still work with the latest games. (last time i checked, linux gets updates frequently on most distros)

SteamOS is based on Debian 8. Debian 10 has been released 6 months ago.

Well considering that Valve just discontinued the Steam Controller and the machines themselves awhile back... the whole Steam Machine initiative seems to be dead. Steam OS is probably unofficially dead as well.

Valve is enhancing Linux gaming with driver development in Mesa and kernel, Steam client, and Proton / Wine.

It's possible to workaround the problem with Rockstar Launcher. The workaround I made awhile back works for me. A future Proton build should have a patch for the pipe and wmic issue and there is a patched 3rd party Proton build that fixes the problem. But the easiest method is the workaround script.

Try this script and add it as a "non-Steam game" to your library then try launching it. If it doesn't work in standard big picture mode then try swapping to the Steam OS Desktop and running it from the desktop Steam client interface.

Cloud gaming only works if you have fast, low latency connection and not very far from data centers. The other problem is cost. Not everyone is willing to pay a monthy subscription to play games in the cloud.

Wine and Proton have advanced gaming on Linux alot in the past year. Now DirectX 11 games are running well on Linux.

The value I see in cloud gaming ATM is for people who don't own computers and want to play PC games on their smartphones and tablets or Linux and Mac users wanting to play Windows Store UWP games like Forza 4 that cannot run in Wine.

Hopefully Wine or a 3rd party comes up to start developing support for UWP apps / games on Linux. As of now I'm playing with In-Home Streaming with a crossover cable connection between the computers for playing Forza 4 demo.

Looks like Valve's focus is with Proton not SteamOS, therefore not a big priority. Virtually nobody in the Linux community is using Steam OS these days as they are better off with a mainstream distro.

That new Linux-powered Atari console sounds like a better choice than Steam Machines at this point. Maybe you'll be able to even put Steam on it since it's AMD and Ubuntu powered.

Lol.. I saw his web episode of him showing off his is Stanely and Doble steam cars...very facinating vehicles. At this point, Steam OS is pretty much obsolete... not even caught up with Debian's sluggish release cycles.
