Which Steam Machine did you buy?

If you got the Alienware, you should of just bought the Alpha if you wanted Windows.

Anyway, you can also be dual-boot SteamOS and Windows 10 on the same hard drive. You don't have to use an external drive.

An easier option is to install Windows 10 inside a VM running on SteamOS. I recommend VMware Player 12. VMware Player 12 supports DirectX 10 level graphics and almost all DirectX 10 and DX11 games with a DX 10 fallback will work (there are a couple games that may have issues due to DX 10 being new in VMware and not entirely bugfree yet but it mostly works well). I'll only recommend the VM option if your Steam Machine has 8GB of RAM or more...if you have the 4GB model then that doesn't really leave you enough RAM to allocate to the VM for guest gaming other than simple indie games with Super Nintendo-era graphics.

Furthermore, most DirectX 9 and older games can be made to work with Wine Staging and there is a tutorial that shows you how to install PlayOnLinux in SteamOS and Wine Staging within it. If you play some Windows-only, DirectX 11-only games then In-Home Streaming is a good option (if you own another PC) or the upcoming LiquidSky cloud streaming service.

Does this happen when using In-Home Streaming and streaming those games to another computer and not the Steam Link?

Have you tried disabling hardware encoding and/or hardware decoding?

It looks like Alienware quietly dropped the i3 models from the lineup and now intends to sell only the more powerful i5 and i7 models with 8GB RAM and 1 TB HDD, priced at $649.99 and $749.99, respectively.

Even though the hardware is better, this doesn't seem like a good idea as now you can pick up an entry-level Windows Alpha for $200 less than the cheapest Steam Machine as Dell will still offer the i3 Alpha.

Yeah, I'm curious how much of a computer the Steam Link is and if it's hackable like the early Apple TVs were.

My understanding is that it's a locked-down ARM-based unit running a special flavor of Linux. I'd be curious to know exactly what specs it has.

Yeah you can pretty much forget about seeing any Linux 4.x kernels on SteamOS until probably mid to late 2017, with the arrival of SteamOS 3.0 beta.

Furthermore, Catalyst is mostly broken on Arch right now if you use Gnome or Cinnamon. The latest Gnome 3.18 and Cinnamon broke the driver. It still works okay with Xfce and Openbox with the 4.1 LTS kernel, though. Personally, I just switched to the r600g driver for now and everything works great.

BTW, the RadeonSI driver are already at OpenGL 4.1 feature level and with the SI Scheduler patch applied to LLVM beats Cataylst performance across the board. R600 just gained another OpenGL 4 extention... so it just needs one more extention to reach 4.1 compliance and match the feature level of RadeonSI--GL_ARB_tessellation_shader. When this happens, I'll likely mainly stick with r600, except when I need to play a rare game needing > 4.1 or need to overclock my GPU for some reason.

Nvidia for sure with the next build, though.

I can part together a system without the benefit of economies of scale, for about $600 and get 60 fps on any modern game. That's, what £450? Drop a game to console-like settings and 75-80fps is easy and not anywhere near £1000.

You probably saw how easy it was for me to price together a used Core i7 2600 Quad Core, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD, 550 Watt PSU (added new), Nvidia GTX 970 Superclocked+ (added new) tower system for $630. Overclock the GPU even further to match the performance of a GTX 980 at no extra cost. The only downside is some parts of the system are used or refurbished and is an actual tower, not a sleek console-style mini-ITX or micro-ATX unit.

Granted, you won't get a new, pre-built Steam Machine with similar GPU specs for anywhere near that price.

Another thing to mention is TV display latency.

On many TVs there is a very noticable display latency. My 4K UHTV has a very high latency of likely 300-400ms latency that I can certainly notice when I'm using my PS4 and playing Watch Dogs. My TV also has a "game" mode that greatly reduces the latency but it's still slightly noticable.

While I prefer 60 FPS with games, a lower framerate (when not artificially capped or poor engine optimization) indicates to me that more of the capabilities of the system are being harnessed to give the best graphical quality.

To me it's like this... run games at a smooth 60 FPS but waste potential computing horsepower that can be used to increase graphics realism and resolution.

Or run games at 30 to 45 FPS when it's because the game is nearly fully maxing out the system capabilities to deliver better graphics fidelity, while still being highly playable and enjoyable.
