Steam OS Compatibility
i was just thinking i have a lot of game on my account and i want to install steam os on my computer rather than buggy windows 8. a few of my games support linux seeing as steam os is built on linux. will windows based games like planetside 2 work with steam os or will SOE have to add support for steam os?

I think a lot of people have missunderstood the whole Steam OS thing... It is based on Linux, BUT, it is not fully Linux, it is Steam. Thus, all the steam games will run smoothly! The games won't need Linux support, nor will they need to be converted into being Linux compatible! Atleast that is how I understand it all!

Happy gaming folks!

you can use Windows to Stream games from a Windows Box to your Linux Box It's up to the game developers to port them to Linux and many are atm

You may be able to get some of your Windows games to play in SteamOS using wine, but if the developer doesn't port it to Linux your only other option is to stream it.

SteamOS WILL NOT play Windows games natively.

wine hmm assuming wine works SteamOS won't be anything like the linux we know it may use some of the main kernel like Android but it may not be compatible...

I think Valve will ask, maybe pay/help dev's move older titles to steamOS but it will be a title by title deal - popularity being one reason to move a game over..

New titles will be different the PS4 will be a unix based system on x86/64 so dev's will already be doing unix so porting is more direct.. Xbone could miss out here with it's windows nature..

Streaming may not be as bad as it sound's it means your weak non gaming laptop may be able game - Assuming it can decode 1080p video on the fly from your main gaming rig. thats running the actual game in windows... ooh streaming to mobile phone from my main gamer now thats could be really cool Steam on Android nice..

Nope, I still think you are all missunderstanding the whole concept... It is only based on Linux. otherwise I don't see why they make such a big fuss about releasing an already excisting OS :P

The core will be Linux based, I know this for sure, but they whole OS will be steam! And so, no Wine is needed (or any other program for that matter)

How can I be sure? Well, the SteamBox is running steamOS, right? And they have said this "Question: Which games can the SteamBox play?
Answer: over the nearly 3000 titles availible on steam, hundreds already run on SteamOS more will be put in soon"

This means that they will do all the work, and we just have to sit back and relax! I bet most games will run smoothly when the SteamOS is released! :D

What games do u port?
Some engines need a complete rewrite some don't..
It's going to be a game by game or engine by engine basis for the most part.. And permission from the dev to make the port..

yes I'm speculating!

but if you look through the engines that support linux you get a picture of what may be possible and what may not be possible!

Please don't comment on such things you don't know about and lead people wrong. SteamOS is Linux with optimizations in certain areas to accomidate gaming performance under linux. It still is Linux. It is not like Android linux it is more like Ubuntu that is rebuilt with differences. Same as Linux Mint is a fork of Ubuntu. SteamOs is a fork of, get this, Ubuntu. Andriod is a linux Kernal and its own fork.

Windows Games that don't have a linux port will not work without wine on the steamOS unless you stream it from you main gaming PC. If it is a Linux port it can run right from the steam machine with steamOS installed on it.

Currently there is some triple A titles heading to steamOS(Linux) also some hints as to what games are heading there. Civ 5 is rumored to be heading to Linux and something poped up on amizon that hints at WoW's internal Linux client might finaly be released to Linux.

Unity's engine just had linux support added to it, so any game using Unity can now be ported with some ease to linux.

Dice (frostbite engine and the BF series) Has shown some interest in working with linux.

But all in all we will see how things go. If we all jump on steam machines and it looks like it makes business money, Triple A games will happen and older (not super old) games might be ported.

If HP and Dell started making steam machines, you bet steam machines will take off.

Maybe it's another fork!
Ubuntu has a lot of stuff steamos won't need!

I realize steam os is on ubuntu 12.04 LTS (long term) and that it would make sense to use a cut down version but cutting more out could make it more like Android in respect to just using the unix kernel..

I wouldn't go as far to say if it works on Ubuntu it will work in steamos! That places it like Android as a ninch OS

I think you missunderstood the whole meaning of my comment. It is true, I do not know much about it, but surely Valve would not make their own OS and then not make sure their games can be played there, that is impossible for sure.

I do not appriciate the fact that you start your comment with thinking I am totaly oblivious about what SteamOS is and how it works, and will work. I don't belive anyone can fully understand or know how it will be when released. An advice could be not to offend the one you are commenting, but instead give more information so both I, and the community, can learn from whatever knowledge you have about the topic.

Happy gaming folks!

Valve has confirmed to www.gamingonlinux.com that SteamOS and Linux will be one distribution channel. Linux games will play natively. Windows games can be streamed from a Windows PC or conceivably played in Wine.

Sorry Green Mace if I offended you.

Here is most of the info I can give regarding this issue.

SteamOS will be a fork of Ubuntu based on existing information, since valve chose to release steam on ubuntu first since it is the most public and well known Linux Variant.

Making a new fork from the linux kernal is very expensive, google has spent billions on it. The android fork is designed for the ARM architecture and formatted from ground up to make it work with just that.

For Valve it is easier to leverage an existing OS, that works very well and it does work very well on ubuntu. I even use AMD video and processor to run my linux box and I have tested several games on it.

All valve has to do and what they stated they are doing is "optimizing sound and control input" to make it better, they are also working with the video hardware vendors to get better optimized video drivers, this includes AMD.

As what they will add or remove for packages to slim ubuntu down is unkown, ubuntu is quite small as it is, less then a gig to download. It is also fairly optimized.

As to games on windows only the only way you will be able to play them is to stream them from your main windows based gaming machine, or if the developers of that game recompile their game for linux and use something else instead of DirectX. DirectX is a windows only API, what is used primarily in Linux is OpenGL. Their are some instinces of it running under wine, which emulates DirectX functions, but this causes in about half the games that run on it undesirable performance. The game developers could create a stand alone wine install for their product, just as one has been developed for netflix to run on Linux, but as I said before, the preformance is not top notch.

Also using wine (is a windows emulator basically) in games especially in high graphic games you need a more beefy computer then what is called for in the specs. So for a developer to use this approach, it would leave the game itself in a state that would look bad on the developer.

So basically if its a windows only game it will not run natively on your Steammachine it will need to be streamed to it.

You seem to be knowing a lot about this, and therefor I ask, would it be possible to intergrate something like wine into steam OS? Could they have a built in emulator in the OS so that the games could still be played?

Thank you for the information and the answers!

To be honest, wine might come prepackaged with SteamOS, you could also instal it yourself. But here is the kicker it would get quit messy runing games through steam desktop and having it run through wine, it would be like adding non steam games to steam as it is now. Games run on top of wine. So you would have to instal the game through wine then add it to steam.

You could instal wine yourself, Valve said they are not locking down the system. But yes it could be possible for the game developer to make a wine install of the game to make it work installed localy on Linux. But that is upto the developer not Vavle. They then could have it as a steam download for linux and it would work with steam.

Currently to run the Windows version of a Steam game in wine you need to run the Windows version of Steam as well. Also the Linux and Windows clients cannot be in online mode at the same time.

I have a number of Steam games I currently run in Wine.
