Can't boot SteamOS install media
No matter if I use the Installer or the Image, when I try to boot into the SteamOS installer, it throws an error about not being able to find the operating system. I DO have a system that supports UEFI, and have followed the instructions to the LETTER.

Any help?

That sounds like an issue with the thumb drive you're using possibly. Have you used it as a boot disk before?

Testing it with another thumb drive - I vaguely recall having issues with this one in the past, although it's been years since I've used it.

Try finding a drive that starts with UEFI, i was getting that message as well until i notied two options for my usb drive. One being the normal and the other UEFI. If you don't see it try editing the boot order in the setup or make sure you have UEFI enabled.

Tried a different thumb drive, this time it straight-up said 'Missing Operating System.' Going to try the image and not the installer on the new thumb drive tomorrow, but for now I'm going to bed.

@eliseo.allen - I picked UEFI. Still didn't do diddly.

Any guesses here would be much appreciated! :)

Tried a second USB stick, even tried running diskpart and explicitly marking the partition as bootable. Got an error saying the operating system 'cannot be found.'

Halps?

Tried installing it on the same hard drive using a different computer. Still nothing. Any help?

OK, to confirm:

* Your USB stick is MBR-partititoned
* Your USB stick contains a single FAT12, FAT16 or FAT32 partition
* Your USB stick contains the full contents of SteamOSInstaller.zip - e.g. a dist/ folder, a pool/ folder, a firmware/ folder, and so on
* In your UEFI firmware, as boot device, you're selecting the UEFI version of your USB stick to boot from (it may be listed as a hard disk), NOT the BIOS version of the USB stick, nor a legacy device like "USB-FDD"

I was also having this same problem. My motherboard is UEFI only, and I also confirmed all the points mentioned above in directhex's post. I still got "operating system not found" no matter what I tried.

In the end I've downloaded the "Ye Olde Steam OS" installer and that's working first time, no problem. Really appreciate the work that's gone into the Ye Olde Steam OS image. :happymeat:

That's because YeOlde installer has MBR boot support.

Recheck your MB setting, default installer will give exactly those errors if you try to boot it MBR mode. It only has binaries for UEFI grub boot loader.

make sure you check your bios for "secure boot" as well. I couldn't boot the usb installer until I changed "secure boot" from "Windows UEFI" to "Any OS"

This fixed it! I went into the UEFI settings and had to change it from 'Windows UEFI' to 'Other OS'. It works now! Thank you so much! :D

hey guys, ok, I've tried all the methods listed above. I have secure boot turned off. I can turn it back on if needed. I'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad E535 AMD A10 with windows 8 pre-installed. as the test machine to just see if I can get it booting right. I have the "Spare" machine I plan on installing it on and it's an HP machine with a UEFI Bios, but no secure boot options I can see. I also tried the Virtual Machine method. and all the different tries and different machines all give me the same result. Upon booting to the Thumb drive/ISO I get a black screen white letters and a minimal GRUB Command line. Using YeOld's installer I am actually able to do it in a virtual machine. Based on the discussion above, it's not surprising, since it's using a different kernal. I've tried searching the internet and haven't found anything that remotly comes close to my problem, accept this thread here. Is there anybody here who might be able to point me in a right direction?

Try the command fs0:\EFI\steamos\grubx64.efi OR the command fs1:\EFI\steamos\grubx64.efi from the EFI shell also if you still get the same issue try using different virtual machine applications such as VMware Player or QEMU.

I'm not getting the EFI Shell in a VM. I'm getting the same boot screen. I'll get a screen cap and post a link to it later today.
