Cannot install SteamOS - No Common CD-ROM detected
Hey guys. I am really keen to try out SteamOS on my desktop PC. I have a spare 1TB drive and have tried both sysrestoe and installer methods but neither is working for me.

For sysrestore method the imaging seems to go ahead just fine but when I reboot its just dumps me into a grub terminal and I can't do anything.

If I use the installer method, it gets through the first couple of steps but then bugs out saying it can't detect common cd-rom drive. I am using a 8GB Fat32 formatted flash drive.

System specs:
Intel 4770K
ASUS Maximus Extreme IV motherboard (UEFI supported)
2x nVidia GTX 780 SLI
32GB Corsair RAM
Spare 1TB SATA hard drive (only drive connected at this point)

Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, the Debian installer requires you to have a optical drive installed inside the target machine, even if you don't use it for installing anything.

I do have a SATA blu-ray drive connected that has nothing in it during install. I tried to run the installer on my ASUS gaming laptop too and got the same error.

I had to try a second usb stick...for some reason it wouldn't detect my first one as a CDROM, but the second one it did. When it says it can't detect the CDROM it means it can't find the source media.

Quick install bootstrap process:
UEFI/Grub loads the linux kernel and init ramdisk
Linux kernel boots with ramdisk-provided drivers and modules then looks for the install media. It is referred to as if it were a CDROM, but it may be a USB stick or hard drive partition
The media is mounted and a "pivot root" is performed so the init ramdisk is no longer the filesystem, but the installer volume is

You're booting to the kernel & initrd but for whatever reason the initrd drivers can't find the install media.

Thanks. I am busy preparing another USB drive at the moment. Will let you know how it goes. Should the drive be in GPT or MBR partition scheme?

Had the same error after preparing a new USB drive. I then tried removing my SATA cable from my blu-ray drive and the install proceeded normally. I go to the part where I had to log in as steam / steam and accept the EULA. I launched steam and nothing happened. So I just when to the post_install step and and everything carried on as per instructions. I now have it installed but after booting (the steam logo) I just get a black screen.

Now what?

Bump. Any one know how to fix black screen after boot?

1. I fixed the cdrom error by reformatting ny 16gig USB with gparted and re-extracting the zip file to it. It then booted and installed flawlessly on my 32gig SSD.

2. I have heard the black screen will happen with multi monitors due to lack of driver support. I suspect that if you dont have multi screens, that your VGA isnt supported.

Seems like you haven't updated steam properly. The icons don't work after a fresh install. You have to type in "steam" in the terminal after logging in as steam/steam.

Try this: After booting when you get the black screen, press CTRL+ALT+F1. Login as steam (no password) and type "startx". That should get you to desktop. Open terminal and type "steam". After the update finishes reboot and it should start normally in Big Picture Mode.

EDIT: And now I notice the timestamps. Thread is almost 2 months old, sigh.
