Can I use Steam OS with a Chromebook?
I used the instructions to write the Steam OS to a flash drive and I am using an Acer C720 Chromebook. When I tell it to boot using external media it beeps indicating that the image is not valid. Did I do something wrong? If so can you tell me what I did and how to do it correctly?

Thank You,
taserman21.

i have a Acer C7 chromebook, in order to make it boot a linux distribution i had to flash it with unofficial coreboot with custom payload (high change of bricking), now when it is done it can run any linux distribution, it now runs Linux mint and game streaming works nicely :)

Did you enable SeaBIOS legacy boot mode on your Chromebook?

Also SteamOS official installer requires UEFI BIOS whereas I think SeaBIOS mimics a classic legacy BIOS.

I recommend trying the unofficial SteamOS ISO image then tansfering that ISO to a USB flash drive via Rufus:

http://repo.steampowered.com/download/SteamOSDVD.iso

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/file-folder/fl/burn-iso-usb.htm

Make sure to select FAT32 and the MBR partitioning scheme in Rufus and also select creating a bootable disc image from the SteamOS ISO.

Thank you for your help, but I checked and it says it requires a 1Tb Hard Drive or more and this Acer only has 4GB. It even gave me a warning saying "Not enough memory to load specified image."

I thought most Chromebooks have at least 16 GB of storage. SteamOS custom installer found on the "DVD ISO" can let you customize the partitions SteamOS installs on. I think you can fit SteamOS in as little as 10 to 15GB, although the default partition scheme would want about 40GB or so.

That said, you definitely won't have much storage for games but I think there is a way to put Steam games on an SD card or USB flash drive.

Bottom line, though, SteamOS is not at all designed to be used on a Chromebook. There are other distributions designed for that.

You should have enough Hard Drive space to install it, but in the error message you got "memory" refers to RAM. Chromebooks don't have much RAM and I know SteamOS requires 4GB.

@[SG]taserman21: Check out this guide, it will help explain some of the basics of SteamOS to you.

I have an ASUS Chromebox (M004U). Around the holidays it went on sale for around 140 USD on amazon, so I impulse bought it. I dual boot OpenELEC / SteamOS on it (the VaporOS package was perfect for installing on the smaller SSD). It's perfect as a steam streaming box, but I had to make some modifications to get there - I had to update the default firmware with coreboot firmware, and I had to make some changes to the included libraries in SteamOS so that the intel graphics worked right. I also upgraded the RAM from 2 to 4 GB, since it was easy to do so. If I wasn't streaming everything, I would have upgraded the SSD in it to something larger than what it came with. As is, it's perfect for streaming videos across my network, and does a great job streaming games.

The firmware in question unfortunately doesn't work on the chromebooks that I'm aware of. You might try looking into ChrUbuntu if you want to use the steam client on it - I see no reason why that wouldn't work?

I actually am I was just hoping I could change it up a bit, however; I want to use a flash drive as a directory for TF2 but have been working on it for the past and can't figure it out. If you how, please explain.

Thank you,
