Funny you bring this up today... There is an article today about BluRay playback on Phoronix.

Here are the steps needed to handle playback on Fedora but can probably be mostly used with SteamOS as well; You just have to source the packages from a different repository.

Oh nice. Thanks
Yeah, I'm really curious to see how BD+ disks will work on SteamOS because this link you provided a while back shows http://www.labdv.com/aacs/advanced-users.php
Source code Config. files
libaacs-0.7.1 KEYDB.cfg
libbdplus-0.1.1 bdplus-vm0.bz2

(like i said earlier, I'm on Windows right now) and the KEYDB.cfg file works fine but the bdplus-vm0.bz2 file is only for Linux. So I'm thinking my BD+ disks might work better on SteamOS

Well on Windows there is expensive proprietary playback software like PowerDVD Ultra, where you can just stick a disc in and expect it to play automatically. Doing this on Linux requires a bit more work but is also free (at least while MakeMKV remains free to use).

Yeah, I have PowerDVD Ultra and to be honest, I'm not all that impressed with it. It's pretty slow and I find the video looks a little sharper(?) with VLC while playing Blu-rays. I don't know how to explain it, I'm not a videophile, it just looks better on VLC, in my opinion
Hmm this would fun to make a package out of this for playback.

DVD's play ok in BPM, just trying to figure out how to play Blu-ray's in BPM

Both play fine in desktop mode
i had a lot problems with this playing bluray on steamos. after adding
/dev/sr0 /media/steam
to /etc/fstab it works now!
seems like steamos doesnt mount the bluray properly by itself.
VLC just seems like the wrong solution to a video player for the TV.

I think a general audience would be better off with Kodi, Plasma Media Center or something similar. At least they are designed for 720p/1080p and high scaling much easier.
