I'm affraid than my USB2.0 ports are to slow for installing a system on... Maybe better with USB 3.0.
I will also test this method soon
No success for now with UEFI Custom install => enable to find bootable partition
or with Non-UEFI ISO install => black screen after boot :/
I'm using a mSata drive , so i think i will face same issue with install on USB drive ...

This BIOS Update only concern Haswell NUC, not mine.
I have just found someone on Steam Forum speaking about a problem with customize EFI directory. This work for me
fix:
Mount /dev/sda1
create directory /EFI/boot
copy /EFI/steamos/grubx64.efi to /EFI/boot
After this, My Drive appear in bios as EUFI bootable drive
And SteamOS launch correctly :)
I will test Remastersys to make a LiveCD of NUC steamos.
SteamOs autologon on Steam Account, so SteamOS certainly need to store Config File somewhere. That not possible for LiveCD experience with RAM acces only. You will need to enter account every time you start the receiver... But it's maybe possible with persistente data on Thumbdrive (lower price of the USB key instead of Sata or Msata drive). Linux Live USB creator seem to do the job with some Debian/ubuntu linux distribution.
If it's possible to use RAM for system and store steamOS config files on USB drive this will allow to build low cost STEAMOS receiver :)
note: Maybe another idea of bndle for Steam Machine's manufacturers ; Steam Machine + SteamOS receiver
Maybe SteamOS will stabilize after release, but right now you'd have to burn new CD's at least once a week to keep up. Persistent data and update requirements make a thumbdrive a much better choice then a CD.
If any manufacturer actually makes something like a Steam receiver it'll most likely run off embedded flash.
Maybe better to create a bootable USB drive with persistente data on this same USB drive.
By this way we only need to update file on the thumbdrive and to plug it again.
If liveCd still use the same directory for SteamOS config (on USB device), that not a problem i think.
