SteamOS stuck on "partitions formatting"
Hello,

I am currently fighting to change my laptop into so-called portable steambox. However, I am not able to get past the formatting sequence. It gets stuck and there is no HDD activity indication... What can I do about it?

Try to set your disks to ide mode in the bios.

I cannot do such thing. All BIOS options I have are to change my date/time, set BIOS password, run diagnostics and configure the boot order.

That sounds like an incredibly limited BIOS. I'd look around more for advanced options or consider a better motherboard.

It would be extremely hard to "consider a better motherboard" since we're dealing with a laptop here - HP Pavilion dv5-1060ew. They have the BIOS like that.

Is this an SSHD? If it is, that might be your problem.

Indeed it is an SSHD. Why is that a problem?

It should be fine if it's a Seagate.

WD is another matter.

I have a Toshiba one. Why does it matter if it's an SSHD?

Some SSHDs don't work on Linux. Blame the manufactures for this.

In the general case it's fine.

Some manufacturers (definitely WD, definitely not Seagate) implement their SSHD in Windows-only drivers, not in the firmware, and those can't work on Linux.

So basically I wiped my drive clean for nothing.

I have no idea. I don't know anything about the implementation of Toshiba's SSHD
