Yeah, I figured. Just a warning, SteamOS and HP don't mix well. I have an HP laptop, too, I had problems with both versions of SteamOS (Alchemist and Brewmaster). I ended up putting Windows back on it

Sorry I don't have a solution to your problem, hopefully someone with more experience has an answer for you

You might want to edit your OP and tell what steps you took to put SteamOS onto your thumb drive, that stuff sometimes helps others figure out what is wrong
And which version of SteamOS your are using from here http://repo.steampowered.com/download/

You're likely going to need to look through your BIOS to find out how to turn of Secure Boot.

Yeah, it sounds like it may be Secure Boot related. You should be able to turn it off in the EFI BIOS configuration utility. Most systems will also let you emulate a legacy BIOS and legacy boot mode devices, so that you could possibly just use the DVD ISO of SteamOS in legacy mode. Some Linux distributions support systems with Secure Boot enabled but I don't believe SteamOS is configured for it. I have used SteamOS on an HP laptop so it isn't really true that HP systems have issues with SteamOS in general.

That said, Ubuntu is a much better choice for a laptop compared to SteamOS. SteamOS has no laptop power management features supported in the BPM UI--no suspend or hibernation support is enabled.

Really? With mine it was always using onboard graphics, amongst other things. And I know I'm not the only one out there with that issue

Well my laptop only has an on-board Intel HD 2000, no discrete GPU. It was a cheap clearance laptop I bought for $200 a couple years back as a toy. That said, hybrid graphics is possible under SteamOS with Nvidia Optimus or Bumblebee but requires extra configuration.

SteamOS on a laptop is pretty pointless due to lack of power saving features and I only did it for testing. I will soon be wiping it off an install Antergos on the laptop.

And that's one of the reasons for me saying SteamOS and HP don't mix well. For a layman, like me, that extra configuration is no easy task

I just went with Ubuntu instead
