So, as SteamOS 2 brewmaster is outdated, and that SteamOS 3 holo (The one on the Steam Deck) is yet to be released, I'll take Steam 3 Holo as a basis.
  • Better than Windows 10 for gaming ? :
Need to be a bit more clear with this context. A lot of games do work wonderfully with it, but still a lot of games do have issues due to being voluntarily restricted by the game devs/publishers, technical issues or limitations. However, a couple of games do even perform better on it, while running them via the Proton conpatibility layer, and thanks to the hard-work of the Codeweavers devs to keep legacy support for old games on Wine, it technically allow to run more Windows games than recent version of Windows.

  • Do most games runs on it ? :
According to protondb.com (A community maintained list of compatibility reports for Steam games) ~>50% plays well without any tinkering or configuration. If you are willing to fix some things yourself, ~>70%.

  • What kind of data it collect from you ?
As far i know, not much more than what the normal Steam client does. Outside of that, the KDE Plasma Desktop (The "normal desktop" UI) have an opt-in telemetry option with different levels of customisation.

  • Do i need to know anything ? :
If you aren't asking for a Steam Deck, you better go with either, most others Linux distributions[distrochooser.de]. Some are specially made for Console/Steam Machine like experience while waiting for the release of Steam OS 3, like ChimeraOS[chimeraos.org] or the reverse-engineered holoISO.[github.com]

Hard to believe that steam is still pedaling this atrocious OS. This is really sad. Even a slightly BUGGY version of 3 would be better than anything garbage like OS2 has always been. I am sure there is some reason they are doing this, probably involving money. Maybe they think the Deck will sell better? Whatever the reason though it is pretty sad when you get HUGE companies like twitch that fail to even be able to make their own streaming software have any real world use, and this debian 8 steam OS 2 is much the same nonsense. I am in need of a NEW OS right now, and the Arch based OS3 would of been really nice to switch too...guess we just have to give them MORE millions of dollars before they can pop it out as a proper FREE product (haha) for us all...yet wow, there should be LOADS of warning to anyone who would want to try and play with this FAILED version of a steam OS (2), because when I tried it years ago it was PURE trash, and I am sure the few patches since then have made very very little difference to that. Steam OS3 is SUPERB I am sure, even though I have yet to own a deck...sheesh, makes me angry enough to SKIP buying one though! I would just like to use the OS they have finally brought to the world, maybe I can find a version of it somewhere early. YET COME ON STEAM GAMES< release the OS already so all of us can get away from windoze madess (or even mac). PLEASE!

well well, someone rev. engineered it? Guess it is on to HOLOISO then for my new OS until the official comes out...I guess I can consider that a 2/3 - 3/4 win :)
