Need help to understand why i have this DNS problem on steam OS install.
Hello Guys ..
First some history.

1. Downloaded the SteamOSDvd.iso because my machine is not UEIF capable. Installation is great with no problems. On first restart the machine goes straight to gnome desktop as steam account. Get error from the steam app that cannot connect to internet. This machine only connection is via wifi. So i setup the wife it detected it fine and i confirmed that i got ip information and dns ips correctly from the router. I ping my gateway address and it replies. I ping the dns IP address and it replies. Now here is the problem....

I ping any hostname local or internet and get error unknown host. I even tried google.com and same problem. I tried to used open dns same problem. Change to a usb wife adapter which SteamOS recognized and i got ip address and everything still get same problem. Checked resolv.conf and the name servers are there. Check interfaces file and their only the loopback information which i find very weird. Shouldnt i get network card information on this file ?

Well thats my problem dns is not working at all on the machine, and also wanted to hear feedback if having the interfaces files pretty much empty is or is not part of this problem.

Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

Have you tried with a regular Linux distribution? It may as well be a problem with the router. Also, did you set custom things on the system network? I mean the ip and dns. You shouldn't normally. The interfaces file doesn't have much in it, i think the default has 2 lines, which aren't related to your network card.

Planning to use Ubuntu 14.04 right now. No customs settings at the moment. I tested my other ubuntu machine and have no problem with internet. Checked router no blocks.

What happens if you ping 8.8.8.8?

Please post the output of ifconfig and route if you are unable to ping that IP.

Try to define 8.8.8.8 as your DNS, which would make Google your DNS server. It is something that is regularly done to troubleshoot routing issues.

Also try to do a /sbin/ifconfig and check if you have your interface configured properly.

If you have one of those Intel WiFi 7260 cards then that could be an issue. There were problems reported when using such cards. You can try to connect by eth0 initially and then do a full update and see if that fixes the WiFi issue.

Adding the alchemist-beta repos could also be an option
