Upgraded from STEAMOS to Debian 10 and Steam Client
Well I was one of the true believers and waited a year and a half for Valve's STEAMOS 3 but after Shadow of the Tomb Raider started playing up, then DOOM Eternal, Crysis 3 and Assassins Creed Origins all wouldn't run under proton I finally had enough I decided to do my own upgrade of STEAMOS 2.195.

First I set up my STEAM Library up on a seperate hard drive so I didn't lose all my games, then given STEAMOS was based on Debian 8 I stuck with that but upgraded to Debian 10.3, then installed the STEAM Client, then updated the NVIDIA drivers to the latest available and Voila! STEAMOS 3 and guess what, DOOM Eternal is fantastic and the bethesda set up is painless, Crysis 3 works a treat and the origin setup is again painless, even Assassins Creed Origins is working fine and the UBISOFT setup was effortless as well.

I washed that STEAMOS right outta my hair!, oh I washed that STEAMOS right outta my hair!! Come on VALVE get a move on with STEAMOS, it'll be a tough job, though to win me back.

You can install the files—Steam Compositor and Steam Mode Switcher respectively—on Debian that make SteamOS automatically boot into Big Picture Mode directly from start-up following This link [www.linuxhelp.com] Granted, it refers to Ubuntu 17.10 but has been proven to work with 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver... It should also work on Debian 10.

Oh a link, hmmm, yes well they can lead anywhere I suppose. Tell you what, I'll get outta STEAM first and try that link direct in my web browser just to be on the safe side. Thanks for the tip and I'll give it a read. Kinda like the way STEAM client works better, especially regards being able to set up a steam library on multiple drives and the monitoring of space actually working whereas it only worked for one in STEAMOS. BPM is good though, cheers.
It´s really the recommended way really these days. SteamOS isn´t as useful as it once was, especially without any real updates or new features. I believe you can also auto-start the Steam Big Picture on start from its settings on login.

You can't rely on Valve, at least when it comes to SteamOS. A pity, actually.

that's what i did over a year ago as well (when i also started to notice games stopped working because libraries etc got to old), enabled the debian backports repo for more recent kernel and nvidia drivers, set it up to boot directly into steam. i have only a controller connected, just as i had with SteamOS, and it works just fine.

I'm not sure about with his OS but with Linux Mint nothing is needed to download. Simply add Steam to startup applications, then once the program is up go into settings and check the checkbox for making it automatically start big picture mode. You will see the desktop for a moment until it loads but I'm fine with that.

Thanks chtwright, Debian 10 has a Tweaks application that allows startup apps to be added. so simple, cheers
