Much better to tweak Ubuntu to act like SteamOS:

Thus dualbooting with grub will be much easier.

Just make a IMAGE BACKUP of your Windows Installation before instaling SteamOS with Dualboot on the same drive !
https://www.paragon-software.com/free/br-free/#
I suggest you use a FREE for non commercial use variant like in the link above or a open source program like in the link below:
https://clonezilla.org/downloads.php

PS: IF you have a stable installation of a OS, it is always a good idea to make a new IMAGE BACKUP of it.
IF you have valuable data which changes often and wich you dont want to loose, a
differential or incremantal backup will be more conveniant :

it is possible, but I would advice you to give SteamOS its own hard disk. During installation disconnect all other SSDs and HDDs.

Steam OS is pretty outdated and a lot of newer games may not work simply because of it and it's old drivers.

GamerOS would probably be a better option.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

installing ubuntu and turning it into steamOS is the best option you have.

SteamOS is just steam for linux. it should still work with the latest games. (last time i checked, linux gets updates frequently on most distros)

SteamOS is based on Debian 8. Debian 10 has been released 6 months ago.

I don't know what Valve's plans are for SteamOS but it's certainly a dormant project now.
