SteamOS won't detect my CD (but drivers are found)
Just wanted to get SteamOS up and running on an old computer. It doesn't fall under some of the requirements, but it'll still work.
Anyway, I'm installing SteamOS off a DVD+RW, and it just won't start. I already dug up the drivers and those were found, but it just says that the disc cannot be mounted and that it may not be inserted.

Am I using the wrong disc or something?

On which model of computer from which manufacturer do you want to install SteamOS ?
Which model of DVD+RW from which manufacturer with which interface are you using ?

You should ALWAYS mention the exact info of your computer when you ask such questions !

E.G.: I want to install SteamOS on a CSL Narrow Box 4K with a external USB-DVD or USB-stick.
If possible also include a link like https://youtu.be/CW_3zzuHeBY or https://www.amazon.de/Mini-PC-lautlose-Silent-PC-Bluetooth/dp/B01GTM1P1U
as there may be sold different models with different CPU ( 32bit or 64bit ) and RAM ( 2GB or 4GB ) under the same name !

Whoops, forgot to list those. :/
Again, it's an old PC and it doesn't exactly meet all requirements, but my Steam library doesn't feature many games that require beasts of PC's.

ASUS P5VD1-X Motherboard
2GB of RAM installed
TSSTcorpDVD-ROM SH-D162C (Samsung) (Yes, it is compatible with DVD+RW's)
nVidea GeForce 6200 TurboCache
160GB of free space
Intel Pentium 4 Processor (3GHz) (64-bit compatible as well)

Accourding to https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socket775/P5VD1-X/e2180_p5vd1-x.pdf your computer has 4 USB2.0 ports … have you tried installing SteamOS from a USB-stick ?

PS: This PC is better than my good old WHITE Narrow Box 4K which only has a 32bit ATOM CPU.

Already tried, but it automatically jumps over to a CD installation, no matter what.
As a reminder, this BIOS does not support UEFI. The only way I can launch via USB is by going into my BIOS and set the currently inserted USB as my main hard drive (which is possible). However, it will then continue to install it on my USB, which is not what it's suppost to do.

Have you tried updating to the NEWEST AVAILABLE BIOS ?

This may be version 0704 from 2006/12/08
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5VD1X/HelpDesk_BIOS/

I was able to install from USB-stick to hard drive on older mainboards !

Maybe its also a problem of the SteamOS USB-install program ... have you tried if you can install UBUNTU ?
At http://releases.ubuntu.com/19.04/ you can download the 64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop image and try out SteamOS from their SOFTWARE CENTER !
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter
https://linuxhint.com/install_steam_ubuntu/
Most Linux users of Steam prefer to use the CLIENT for Steam with another Linux like Ubuntu anyway ... and IF it works with Ubuntu, it should also be possible to install SteamOS later.

Yep, I can 100% confirm that I've updated it to the latest BIOS today. 2006 was the last version. I also tried to install Ubuntu off a CD and I was able to get to the "Try Ubuntu" or the "Install Ubuntu" screen. (again, can't boot from USB)

then TRY UBUNTU ... as this will start the LIVE CD system from which you can try to install to your HDD later.

AVOID the automated installing to your HDD and tell the installer that you are an EXPERT which allows you to create your own partitions on your drives ... this tip may also help you with SteamOS !

Even though I said that this PC is 64-bit compatible, it slowly ran into issues this time with 18.04.2 this time. I'll try to test the 32-bit version first and we'll see where it goes.

16.04 also was having issues, where it would stay on a black screen with no indicator or drive activity, got around this by enabling 'nomodeset', so Ubuntu works fine, and it will even install fine if I want to go for that.
So the disc isn't bad, SteamOS just wont read it.

Then your best choice is to install the LONG TERM SUPPORT version of Ubuntu 18.04 !
I wont install 17.04 or older versions, as they have older KERNEL and may be prone to Intruders becasue of this … you could also try the new version 19.04 as currently it might be easier to get help in the ubuntu forums with the newest version.

You could try to get help for solving the SteamOS installation problems with your PC in a HACKER SPACE in your area … where are you from ?

When I have problems I cant solve myself, I usually ask for help at www.metalab.at :steamhappy:

I don't need those "Hacker Spacers" or whatever they're called. I never even heard of them. If I want to install Ubuntu, I'll go for 18.04, but that will be my last option, as I still don't know how to resolve these issues with SteamOS.

I think I should move this entire thing to GBAtemp, maybe people can help me out there, unless anyone else can help me here.
