Steam OS just installed and won't boot PLEASE HELP
The first part of the install had been difficult. I hadn't even heard of a BIOS before. But it worked, and it was great. The first part of the installation off the pen drive: fine. The second part via the Internet: absolutely fine once I plugged it in rather than using wifi. However, just when I thought it was all over, it refused to boot. The Steam symbol came up, and yet it simply stayed that way. What on Earth do I do

My computer is an HP pavilion laptop with a Hexa core. Since its failing to boot I don't remember much else except that it's specs where higher than the requirements

Also, in order to get the install to work I turned off secure boot and enabled legacy mode

And I also took out the pen drive before rebooting because I thought it wouldn't need it

And, for some reason, the light to tell me that caps lock is on wont stop flashing

That means you are experiencing a kernel panic.
Something went wrong and the Kernel dunno how to continue (similar to BSOD in windows)
I don't know if it's possible (maybe by pressing tab) but try bringig up the console BEFORE the caps lock starts to flash, so you will be able to tell what happened, beacuse it will appear on the console.

When I boot it, it's black, a "press esc to open boot menu" option comes up, followed by a menu in front of the steam symbol. I used it to try and restart and fix the PC. Lots of code lines ensue, followed by a reboot. So, I have access to everything apart from the actual OS, since when I select "boot OS" and the menu disappears, the Steam symbol remains, and it just stays that way. I should probably also mention that I used the automated install

UPDATE: reinstalling with expert mode, it appears to be stuck on "configuring nvidia-kernel-dkms. You said something about a kernel panic, Marcsello. Could this have something to do with it?

Well, if that driver is problematic, it can cause kernel panic...
But you can only be sure if you able to bring up the console, and read the message it throws when it fails... I think the boot logo is hiding it, so yeah... you have to switch to console somehow

ANOTHER UPDATE:

OK, so, this time it worked. BUT desktop wont open...

Please provide more information on how is it "wont open"

like there are any error messages? what settings you have changed? is it totally locks up, or something else?
