Oculus Rift/VR gaming support in SteamOS?!?
Been wondering what a unique selling point for SteamOS/Steambox could be compared to the consoles, and one that would be really exciting would be the dawn of VR gaming, starting perhaps with the Oculus Rift!

With it's openness, SteamOS/Steambox could be the ideal development enviroment for VR gaming now and in the future?!

If Oculus VR and Valve would get together, for me, it would be a dream come true! :)

Thoughts?!

The Oculus Rift is already supported in Linux (What SteamOs is based after). You probably can't navigate the User interface with it, not that you'd want to 2D thing hurt your eye on the rift.

That's promising! Having the rift development effort focused on SteamOS would perhaps speed up the process and gather the different players around it. About the UI - would't it be a matter of making a virtual livingroom for the rift, where you'd have 100" TV with the neat SteamOS UI running on it :D ...finally the livingroom for me, that's not from IKEA...

:p that could indeed be a cool gimmick to render a living room with a TV and rendering the actual screen output to that virtual TV for the rift. allowing users to create different virtual livingrooms that can be changed maybe...

So which will get out of beta first, the occulus rift or steamos? For reference, PS4 is 11/15 and XB3.11 for Workgroups is 11/22.

I don't think the Steam Box will be suited to VR gaming, it's supposedly aimed at "living room gaming" which would mean using your TV to play games and also for people to play games with local co-op. I think regular PCs will still be the best platform for VR, where it's just players using VR headsets. It seems pretty pointless to get everyone to sit by the TV just to don their own headsets. But maybe in the future it could be an accessory

The Occulus is gonna be too expensive for multiple units in one household anyway (at least for a while).

I'm not talking about Steam Box or Steam Machine. For me, steam os will be installed on my brand new PC, and I will be playing on my G74SX laptop via streaming. For that purpose, I will need to get a gigabyte mob, as it happends to have 2 gblan ethernet ports, and I can eliminate lag from a) the network going out and b) the network going to my laptop. Sure, the cat6 cable will be a slight pain, but I'll get used to it. In the case of the rift, I'm slightly worried about the performance I would get at my laptop, if the oculus is connected to it, or if it works at all.

Latest official info is that they will support Linux, but only at a later time. They will start Windows only.

Arn't Valve officially supporting the HTC Vive rather than the O.R.? That has day 1 Linux support.

So I assume that will work very well with Steam Machines. O.R. have said they will be working on Linux support after they release v1 for windows.
