A lot of folk scoff at the APUs, but I think there's quite a bit of bang for the buck in them for a cheapskate casual gamer.
That said, the A10-7850K is not explicitly listed as supported in the APU section of the Catalyst page, so I'd say give it a miss for now.

I would agree to be cautious and see how driver support unfolds, but there is a lot of promise. Intel are definitely significantly ahead on the CPU front (even AMD aren't arguing against that now) but in the benchmarks that can utilise HSA, the A10 can beat out even the core i7-4770K (source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7677/amd-kaveri-review-a8-7600-a10-7850k/10 ). This is obviously currently limited to a few very specific applications and there is obviously very little HSA support at the moment and there's no guarantee it'll catch on... but the technology is certainly interesting :)
EDIT: Also, a word of caution to the OP; if you plan to build a small-ish PC with the A10-7850K, get an aftermarket cooler - doesn't have to be an expensive or huge one, but the stock cooler on my A10-6800K was woefully inadequate in my (admittedly very thin) case
Windows:

win 8 and ubuntu on opengl:

To be honest if you can wait, wait at least a month or two if you can, if amd gets their act together with their drivers (they are trying to get caught up with nvidia) it will be a better choice over all. If you cant wait then go with an i5 and at least a gtx 650ti.
I have this cooler master heatsink with interchangeable 120mm fan that has not failed me yet, except the fan died that I changed later. So yeah I have alot of back-up stock coolers sitting around.
Lesson from 3 years ago don't get cpu coolers with no interchangeable fan. That was waste of $50.
I can wait, my dad and his 10y rig is in no rush.

That said... it's clearly not reaching its 95W TDP so later driver releases/optimisations may cause it to draw more power up to it's thermal ceiling (I don't know, but it could happen I guess), so I'd still recommend a better cooler - I use a Corsair H60 but that is overkill really; I only bought that as a future investment :P
Btw for the people claiming there are no linux drivers, there are: "as cDn[]Dsyc[]-[]o claimed"
AMD did supply a Kaveri press driver for both Windows and Linux. The binary driver was labeled "AMD 13.30 RC2 Linux Jan7 2014":)

The gpu will be able to play most games on 1080p, in the intro scene to BF4's single-player campaign (1920x1080, Medium Details), the AMD Kaveri system (with no discrete GPU) consistently pushed frame rates in the 28-40 FPS range.
However there are big differences between windows and linux on performance part.
As AMD confirmed they wan't mantle on linux, it will be interesting for game developers to have a API that is even faster and even cross platform compatible.
The question if the apu will use the gpu as cpu, simply i don't think so our i would already have found out.
Just wait! for the mony it's a great product!

AMD is now supported as well as Crossfire support by YMMV but I am sure they are working dual graphics support as well:
Is A10-7850k good for linux. I plan to buy one but can't find info in net
So unless you are planning to buy a GPU card, I would not recommend it.
Its so bad Valve made an sticky from this subject:
