A10-7850K APU is it supported?
Now I can make a cheap system to replace my dad's 10 year old pc, just get the motherboard, the new apu, and the steamos. This will be my first experience on the apu and linux. I'm very new to linux so what am I gonna run into here?

Don't worry about the other parts I have alot spares.

I forgot to mention that I'm trying to build the new PC like a tank cuz I have not cleaned my dad's PC that much and its still working after ten years!!

I just set up my A8-6600K / HD7750 this morning and both installation and running were fine apart from my not reading the 1GB disc requirement and the Radeon video output (GPU and APU) being offset on the HDMI TV before SteamOS boots into the drivers.

A lot of folk scoff at the APUs, but I think there's quite a bit of bang for the buck in them for a cheapskate casual gamer.

That said, the A10-7850K is not explicitly listed as supported in the APU section of the Catalyst page, so I'd say give it a miss for now.

I'm in no rush to get anything right now and all these stuff are new that I gotta kick it off a cliff to see if it comes back as a Kazuya. The reason I'm picking this fm2+ apu more than the other fm2 apu is because it won't have dead weight (gpu cores) and becomes 12 compute cores when I deemed it too weak to play games. That means I'll just stick a vid card in there.

a cheap GPU is faster them the new APU

A cheap equivalent GPU and a core i3 (which is the best intel match) is not cheaper than an APU though. APUs are also good if you want to build a small form factor gaming machine - Intel are catching onto this with their Iris Pro graphics inside the Gigabyte Brix pro, but that costs far more than an equivalent APU system.

I would agree to be cautious and see how driver support unfolds, but there is a lot of promise. Intel are definitely significantly ahead on the CPU front (even AMD aren't arguing against that now) but in the benchmarks that can utilise HSA, the A10 can beat out even the core i7-4770K (source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7677/amd-kaveri-review-a8-7600-a10-7850k/10 ). This is obviously currently limited to a few very specific applications and there is obviously very little HSA support at the moment and there's no guarantee it'll catch on... but the technology is certainly interesting :)

EDIT: Also, a word of caution to the OP; if you plan to build a small-ish PC with the A10-7850K, get an aftermarket cooler - doesn't have to be an expensive or huge one, but the stock cooler on my A10-6800K was woefully inadequate in my (admittedly very thin) case

The A10-7850k does have drivers out for linux, not the best but they do run opengl well. But not not all the features are ready yet and some might never be ready. They A10 would be compared to a i5 if anything and gaming wise it beats it out, even with poor initial release drivers. You want the same performance graphicly and processing as the a10 you will be looking at a low end i5 and a 7750 or a gtx 650ti. Which will be about $320 to $350. But the a10 is setup to trade blows with the i5 and the A10 has better perfomance in gaming.

Windows:

win 8 and ubuntu on opengl:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_a10kaveri_linwin&num=1

To be honest if you can wait, wait at least a month or two if you can, if amd gets their act together with their drivers (they are trying to get caught up with nvidia) it will be a better choice over all. If you cant wait then go with an i5 and at least a gtx 650ti.

I have this cooler master heatsink with interchangeable 120mm fan that has not failed me yet, except the fan died that I changed later. So yeah I have alot of back-up stock coolers sitting around.

Lesson from 3 years ago don't get cpu coolers with no interchangeable fan. That was waste of $50.

I can wait, my dad and his 10y rig is in no rush.

Ok good - though it actually appears that the 7850K uses substantially less power than the 6800K

That said... it's clearly not reaching its 95W TDP so later driver releases/optimisations may cause it to draw more power up to it's thermal ceiling (I don't know, but it could happen I guess), so I'd still recommend a better cooler - I use a Corsair H60 but that is overkill really; I only bought that as a future investment :P

I got a question that I want to confirm on the HSA feature of the AMD kaveri. If you stop using the integrated gpu to use a dedicated vid-card, does it disable the gpu like the older fm2 or does it allocate it as another cpu turning the apu to a 12 core?

The A10-7850k will be great, as apu and it will be suported, AMD and steam are working togheter so you will be fine for,

Btw for the people claiming there are no linux drivers, there are: "as cDn[]Dsyc[]-[]o claimed"

AMD did supply a Kaveri press driver for both Windows and Linux. The binary driver was labeled "AMD 13.30 RC2 Linux Jan7 2014":)

http://news.softpedia.com/news/AMD-Catalyst-13-30-RC3-Linux-Video-Driver-Brings-Support-for-AMD-A10-Desktop-APU-417074.shtml

The gpu will be able to play most games on 1080p, in the intro scene to BF4's single-player campaign (1920x1080, Medium Details), the AMD Kaveri system (with no discrete GPU) consistently pushed frame rates in the 28-40 FPS range.

However there are big differences between windows and linux on performance part.
As AMD confirmed they wan't mantle on linux, it will be interesting for game developers to have a API that is even faster and even cross platform compatible.

The question if the apu will use the gpu as cpu, simply i don't think so our i would already have found out.

Just wait! for the mony it's a great product!

SteamOS will be supporting the APU, although it didn't list the Kaveri specifically it did list R7 Radeon series (which is what the APU is classified as for GPU end) and R7 250. This article was the only source I could find ATM, but I read it in another article.

http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/33621-steamos-adds-support-for-amd-intel-graphics

AMD is now supported as well as Crossfire support by YMMV but I am sure they are working dual graphics support as well:

Sorry for necro.
Is A10-7850k good for linux. I plan to buy one but can't find info in net
Green Orange Apr 7, 2015 @ 3:05pm
The CPU from the A10 is fine, the GPU is officially supported, but the driver really really really really sucks.

So unless you are planning to buy a GPU card, I would not recommend it.

Its so bad Valve made an sticky from this subject:

I would advise against it, especially in motherboard formats with limited chipset choices.

tl; dr - too long; don't read!
