How do I play an online game but appear offline?

I'm on invisible mode on my steam-list because I have a friend that is rather annoying and bugging me every hour. As annoying and clingy as he seems, he's actually quite nice. He bought me and my BF a 20 dollar multiplayer game & he's even said he's going to buy it for my cousin. The problem is, he's kind of a toxic person in the game (stealing items/calling us bad sometimes/etc).
So the only reason why I haven't unfriended him is because he's bought me like.. 3 games in the past.

Thing is, I want to play the game online w/ other people, but I do not want him to bug me about it. I'm a bit scared to enter the game with him bugging me like "Oh- you're done?? CAN WE PLAY??" (he doesn't type like that).

Invisible mode is it other than offline from all friends.

Or block him until you are finished.

Go offline on your friends list or stay invisible and play the game (unless you have him added to the in-game friends list if it has one).

Or just delete him and move on.

You can go "offline" via Steam > Friends.

You won't be able to use the friends network (chat).

Better yet, if someone is a pestilence, communicate with them and if that doesn't work, block them.

Profile Privacy changes will reveal an Eye in green, scored out, visible to you while in game.

The problem with those solutions is the fact that he's bought me AND my boyfriend a game. A 20 dollar game. That is, not only, incredibly rude, but I'd feel guilty!

I guess that's a good solution. I have spoken to them about it and they're like "oh yea I understand" but then 2 hours later, he pesters me again. I just dunno what to do-

I forgot about game details, which can be set as private, and you won't appear as in-game via the friends network or profile page IIRC.

Temporarily (blocking) doing it, can also be done.

My ex-gf and i played that game over and over, until we were over.

Just be honest with him... say something like "Hey, I appreciate you buying me games in the past and I think you're a nice guy but I find it difficult & annoying sometimes playing with you in-game. If you are not going to change, I will block or delete you from my friend list."

Might sound kind of mean but there are people that you have to spell it out for them. Heck if it was me and the person think he can harass me just because he gifted me a $20 game, I'll just gift him back an equal or greater value then delete him. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
