Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson contemplating doing Quake movie series (May 2021)
Article from May 18, 2021
https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/ent/dwayne-johnson-quake.html

From the article:
"Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson wants to start up a new video game adaptation series for the Quake games."

"While video game adaptation movies have a poor reputation, some argue that they’re picking up steam."

"Quake isn’t as well-known today as it once was, but is still a major force in the video game industry."

"The rumor that Ryan Reynolds was looking at Quake several months ago makes it sound like there may be more studios talking about turning the long-running video game into a film, or that Reynolds brought it up with Dwayne Johnson himself. The two know each other. They recently filmed 'Red Notice' together for Netflix."

"If 'The Rock' does turn Quake into a movie franchise, it will be interesting to see what character he plays and what they pull from the wide-ranging series. With the long history Quake players have with machinima (movies made by filming inside a video game while playing it), 'The Rock' can expect fans to have a lot of loud opinions on what they want to see happen in a Quake movie."

From the article:
"While it’s definitely possible that what industry insider, Daniel Richtman, has heard is true, we can’t help but take this with a massive grain of salt. For starters, and as far as id’s back catalog goes, at least, Quake has only ever managed to attract a niche audience compared to its aforementioned spiritual sibling and despite being one of the biggest names in Hollywood and a major box office draw, even the former wrestler could have trouble successfully pitching such a risky venture."

"Not helping to make that case is director Andrzej Bartkowiak’s 2005 Doom adaptation, which starred Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and bombed during its initial run in theaters, ultimately failing to recoup its $60-$70 million budget. This was long before 'The Rock' became a well established actor, however, and considering the recent spate of successful video game movies, one could argue that studio executives would be much more open to the idea of a live-action Quake production in 2021."

I have to confess that I was today years old when I learned Doom 2005 wasn't an Uwe Boll movie. By genre, content, and quality, so far I assumed it was.
On a side note there seem to be a "Doom Annihiliation" from 2019, with a hefty score of 3.7 on IMDB. If someone compares it with the 5.2 of the "original", which wasn't pushed by Doom 2016 and Eternal by the way, I'm not sure why one would conclude "Ah, yes, movies based on shooters are hot stuff now".
