Cats, scientifically known as Felis catus, are small domesticated carnivorous mammals and the only domesticated species of the family Felidae. They are valued by humans for companionship and their ability to kill vermin.

Scientific name for the domestic cat is Felis catus, and they are the domesticated members of the Felidae family and are its smallest member. Cats have retractable claws adapted for hunting small prey such as mice and rats.

They have a strong, flexible body, quick reflexes, and sharp teeth, with well-developed night vision and a sense of smell. Cats are social animals but are solitary hunters and crepuscular predators.

Domestic cats use many vocalizations for communication, including purring, trilling, hissing, growling/snarling, grunting, and several different forms of meowing. Their body language, including position of ears and tail, relaxation of the whole body, and kneading of the paws, are all indicators of mood. Cats are known for spending considerable amounts of time licking their coats to keep them clean.

Their intelligence is evident in their ability to adapt, learn through observation, and solve problems. Cats have a long history of coexistence with humans, with evidence suggesting that domestication occurred in the Near East around 7500 BC.

They establish territories that vary considerably in size, in one study ranging 7–28 ha (17–69 acres). The timing of cats' activity is quite flexible and varied; but being low-light predators, they are generally crepuscular, which means they tend to be more active near dawn and dusk. However, house cats' behavior is also influenced by human activity, and they may adapt to their owners' sleeping patterns to some extent.

In ancient Egypt, cats were revered, and the goddess Bastet often depicted in cat form, sometimes taking on the war-like aspect of a lioness. Many centuries have passed, but they still rule the world to this day.
