Question: Mordhau's color scheme.
Question, will this game has the same level of gore/brutality and "grimdarkness" as Chivalry medieval warfare had or will it be more of a "colorful" approach to the medieval genre? Personally why Chivalry was so appealing and popular was due to the very brutal combat with very grimdark aesthetic look. Judging by early alpha footage scattered across the web it seems that Mordhau has taken more of the "colorful" approach which is very common and oversaturated in the gaming market with games such as Kingdom come deliverance and Mount and Blade having already this "colorful" look. I really loved the dark theme of Chivalry such as having silly brain splatter effects once a killing blow had been delivered on your foes head and bloody decapitation. Mordhau seems to enable you to decapitate your foes, but only really after when your foe is laying on the ground ragdolled. Chivalry had this mechanic reward people a satisfactional kill similar to what old Counter-Strike had with headshots on 1.6. Considering Mordhau is following the realistic hardcore gaming mechanic of Chivalry it would stand to reason that having similar rewarding grapichal effects would only enhance the experience and make the game more enjoyable.

Mordhau looks very cinematic. If you're on Pit you'll have crazy god rays and a really dramatic sunset/afternoon. On Mountain Peak the lighting is super cold and uncomfortable. Grad is kind of spooky, kind of foggy and dark (reminds me of Belmez actually). So I guess you could say the feel of the game varies map by map.

As for decaps, it's totally possible to decap someone as a killing blow, they don't have to be on the ground.. Now something we've done to make those decaps more satisfying when they occur is to add in partial decap/dismemberment - if you're using a rapier and you slash someone's head, it probably won't fly clean off. Meanwhile you could be using a zwei and do the same, but if you strike vertically, you might not get a decap since you're not actually chopping the neck at all.

Decap/dismemberment takes into account the 'strength' of the weapon used, the angle you hit the body part at, and the armor worn on that body part. As for head explosions, we think they're a little too outrageous when compared to the overalll feel of the rest of the game.

Even though you would smash a foes head with a hammer?

even if someone was lying down with their head against hard rock and you smashed against him with a hammer, you probably wouldn't cause his head to violently explode. cave-in, sure. but not explode.

causing heads of standing, moving people in armour to explode is quite unrealistic.
