Left 4 Dead 2 Expert Add-on / Custom Map Players

This group (primarily North American region) is for those L4D2 gamers who would like to play add-ons / community maps on Expert Realism with solid teamwork oriented players & like-minded individuals. If you have ever looked for a game to join on an add-on map but lamented the fact that they mostly seem to be on easier difficulty levels (sadly) & appreciate and enjoy more of a challenge, then this is the group for you!!

The hope is that this group will help to facilitate finding others to play with and organizing such fun games easier. Remember that group members should appear under the group's tab on your steam friends list.

New L4DMAPS mapping contest coming December 1st

I like the idea of these contests in theory but it seemed like the last one didn't garner that much interest or participation. I think the fact that it was such a short deadline (60 days) as well as summer here in the Northern hemisphere kind of derailed that. Thankfully this latest contest gives mappers an extra month to work on their project and will run for a duration of 90 days. No details on a theme yet but we will find out 2 weeks from now.

Here's hoping that this event will help spur continued involvement and map development in the L4D2 community, the best and most realistic wish of which is to see these types of contests result in one or more projects coming together as an exciting concept and building perhaps one map as a solid base as a precursor to eventually becoming a full campaign. Case in point: Flood Center[www.l4dmaps.com], a flooded version of Dead Center, which I don't think actually made it in time for the previous 'natural disasters' themed contest, but is a gradual work in progress with plans to add 2 maps to the end. It's a long way off but I guess we'll eventually see how it turns out.

'Back to School' campaign released

I know this news is a bit late but Hurricane Sandy smacked us around us pretty good here recently so I was without power for 8 days.

Anyway, the first version of the campaign was released a couple of weeks ago and has also since been updated to version 1.05 to address some issues (most notably the non-stop horde bug). Sadly, the neat custom weapon animations and models from the initial release were removed due to some conflicts with other mods but perhaps we might see them make a return at some point?

As far as the campaign goes, the level design looks stellar and quite detailed and first impressions are that this may have the makings of one of the top ones. Haven't really played it much yet but I love the custom content that has been added, in particular the ambient sound effects that really help set the mood, such as the waterfall and radio broadcast on the first map. Which reminds me, I should point out this snippet from the campaign documentation (if you can't hear those things in your game):

Known conflicts with other custom campaigns
- Conflict with "Silent Hill L4D2” and “Vienna Calling 2”. Both of them contain file “soundscapes_manifest.txt” in vpk archive. This file causes wrong ambient sounds errors in many campaigns, including Back To School.
- Conflict with “Warcelona” campaign. The teddy bear may use wrong collision model.

We recommend you to turn off campaigns that cause conflicts (Menu>Extras>Add-ons).
Of particular relevance is the Vienna Calling 2 conflict, because it's on the recommended list of maps here and will affect some ambient sound effects. The Warcelona issue seems somewhat more minor. I'm not sure but I think the gnome has been replaced with a teddy bear model whose physics might behave a bit differently.
