Any PCVR is better than no VR (Quest can also plug into a PC as a PCVR). Avoid anything else (such as the Oculus Go or other toys)

If you DO have a PC w/ GTX 960 or better...
• If you want the best overall quality, consider the Valve Index first!
• If you want a low cost start with upgrade path to Index, consider a used OG Vive first
& $200 off the Valve Index trick outlined 1/2 way down below!
• If want the lowest total cost, consider the Odyssey Plus
• If want the portable & reasonable starting cost, consider Quest 2 or 3
(WARNING: pricey Oculus games, lower GFX quality, 'decent' tracking & 'Meta')
• If want the other used choices, consider the Rift S ($250?)
• If you want the LOWEST cost buy used PCVR (I started on a used $200 Vive & loved it)

If you do NOT have a PC w/ GTX 960 or better...
• A "pretty good" VR PC can be obtained for $400 or less and run 99% of all VR games
• A Quest is the "no-PC" choice (but pricey games, PC quality reduced, & 'Meta')
• Quest quality is "very good" when ran by PC wireless and even better with a cable, but still not "100% amazing" because it's a compressed signal and REDUCES the GFX quality, even on high GPUs. However most won't notice that. And many value portability over visual quality, and it isn't all that bad of a quality GFX in the end.

$150 = 👍👍Quest 2 (or if super cheap a Samsung Odyssey+ or other WMR)
It's at least 95% as fun as the more expensive options, and has fairly decent hand tracking quality. On PCVR they are great, but not on AMD GPU. The Quest is usually all you need.
$150 = 👍👍Vive (if used)
Best tracking, least portable, most game choices (paid and free), UPGRADEABLE ability that saves money, optional wireless add-on
$150 = 👍Oculus Rift S (if used)
Good if decent hand tracking quality is enough, if future upgrades are not that big of a concern, AND you fit the non adjustable IPD range.
$150 = 👎 PlayStation PSVR1 (old)
ONLY if you have a PlayStation and don't mind a greater long term cost, significantly REDUCED fun/experience/tracking, reduced visual quality, and much fewer games
$500 = 👍👍👍Oculus Quest 3
Good if you don't have a GTX 1060 or better PC, or wireless is more important than personal identity and data, & graphics, & long term game cost. The no-controller hand tracking shows unique potential. FREE Quest Steam Link, or USB solutions and $20 USB-C cables open some more capability (listed below). Note that on AMD GPU the PCVR quality is likely degraded.
$550-$1100 = 👍👍 PlayStation PSVR2
ONLY if it is made able to do PCVR (might be working now❕). Or PS5 is about $500 + PSVR2 is about $600 for $1100 total if you use a PlayStation and don't mind a greater long term cost, significantly REDUCED fun/experience/tracking, reduced visual quality, and much fewer games
$500 to $800+ = 👍👍👍Valve Index * (Special deal with HLVR)
Best consumer choice. One of the best screens & FOV, 360-degree tracking, comfort, sound, gfx, & overall quality on a bigger budget (can use older base stations), most game choices (paid & free)
Click here for Steam Page (helps group rank even if don't buy)
* $200 off the Valve Index FULL system trick! (see below)
* $500 HMD upgrade option if already have Vive setup
$600 = HP Reverb G2 👎(Steam page)
Future alternative with better specs than the Rift S, but TBD testing results.
$700 to 1,200 = 👍👍 Pimax 5k
Largest 200 degree field of view, but many down sides beyond that one upside

Details with Pro / Con (sorted by price) & Related Topics (at the end)
Click here for 2-Months VR Games (Arizona Sunshine, etc)
Samsung Odyssey+ (other WMR's are lower)
SUMMARYIt's at least 95% as fun as the more expensive options, and has fairly decent hand tracking quality.
+ Low cost (biggest BANG for your buck)
+ AMOLED Display @2880 x 1600
+ 90Hz refresh rate
+ Large optical sweet spot (place where clear, and see clear near edges)
+ Standard HDMI connector to video card
+ Pretty good headphones
+ Special lens that blurs out the screen door effect
+ Native access to Steam VR and WMR marketplaces, and Rift store with Revive
- HAVE to use onboard headphones, non-removable
- 2 tracking cameras with occasional blind spots (though not an issue unless hold hand in the blind spot for long)
- Poor face padding (Can get after-market padding to improve it)
- Cant tilt up the headset

PlayStation PSVR
SUMMARYOnly if you have a PlayStation and don't mind a greater long term cost, significantly REDUCED fun/experience/tracking, reduced visual quality, and much fewer games
+ Works with PlayStation
- Many fewer games to play (and missing many great ones!)
- Games cost more money
- Headset optics and graphics are much lower quality
- Hand & head tracking is not very good

Vive (if used)
SUMMARYBest tracking, least portable, most game choices (paid and free), upgrade ability that saves money
+ Cost (if used, and can re-sell for same price too if upgrade later)
+ Best-in-class Tracking of controllers and head (base station / lighthouses)
+ Can upgrade to Valve Index (compatible base stations) and FULLY save what you paid!
+ AMOLED Display @2160 x 1200
+ 90Hz refresh rate
+ Field of view: 110 degrees.
+ Optional wireless add-on
+ Vive & Index have the largest game compatibility (and can play Oculus "exclusives" too)
~ Rift store with Revive
- SDE (Screen door effect) & some say colors are off
- Large controllers with no thumb stick (uses large touch pad)
- Base station tracking is less portable (though not hard to setup really)

Oculus Rift S
SUMMARYGood if decent hand tracking quality is enough, if future upgrades are not that big of a concern, AND you fit the non adjustable IPD range.
+ 5 Tracking Cameras
+ Oculus touch controllers (- Loose battery covers)
+ Pass-through camera views
+ Next-gen lens design gives clear visability to the edge of FOV where others are fuzzy
+ RGB LCD has better clarity than an OLED of a higher resolution
+ Unusually fast and forgiving/easy customer service on warranty issues (usually not needed)
~ Sub-par speakers (but can use headphone)
- LCD display @2560 x 1440 (not as deep blacks as OLED)
- 80Hz refresh rate
- No physical IPD adjustment, only software
- Uses displayport to connect to PC instead of more common HDMI

Oculus Quest3
SUMMARYIt's super good, a reasonable price, and works GREAT with PCVR Steam on NVIDIA GPU's. What more do you need to know? (AMD GPU might significantly reduces quality of PCVR, see "AMD GPU" note below)

Oculus Quest2
SUMMARYGood if you don't have a GTX 960 or better PC, or wireless is more important than graphics & long term game cost. The no-controller hand tracking shows unique potential.
+ OLED display @2880 x 1600
+ 4 Tracking cameras for good movement range
+ Oculus touch controllers (Loose battery covers)
+ Physical IPD adjustment
+ Next-gen lens design
+ FREE Quest Link to PC USB2 or $20 USB-C cables to PC for some boost GFX (see way below)
+ Can use your own headphones
~ Optional wired SteamVR use via Oculus Link w/ *limitations & low quality (see below)
~ Optional no-controller hand tracking shows unique potential (direct use in games is TBD)
- 72Hz refresh rate (slowest in its class)
- Dim display
- 2-3 hour battery life which will likely get worse over the years (like a cell phone)
- Essentially running off smartphone hardware
- Has a different storefront than Rift.
- Needs games that are specifically (re)designed for Quest
- Can't mirror display on your TV for guests, but you can 'cast' to chromecast or android
- AMD GPU significantly reduces quality of PCVR (see "AMD GPU" note below)

*SteamVR via Oculus Link
++ See "Accessories" below for FREE USB2 option and the $20 USBC Wires
+ Allows tethering to PC for better graphics if you have a good enough GFX card
+ Play (*some? all?) games from SteamVR
- Even then, image quality is lower than most/all PC VR options on this list.
- *It is rumored that Developers can 'Opt out' of Oculus Link. Leads some to suspect Oculus might limit content harshly. They could force you to purchase the Oculus version, in order to be allowed to play the SteamVR copy you also already have.

$500 to $800+ Valve Index * (Special deal with HLVR)
SUMMARYBest consumer choice. Best screen, 360-degree tracking, comfort, sound, gfx, & overall quality on a bigger budget (can use older base stations)
Click here for Steam Page (helps group rank even if don't buy)
+ Best-in-class Tracking of controllers and head (base station / lighthouses)
+ Refined LCD Display @2880 x 1600
+ 144 Hz fps refresh rate
+ Adjustable 80/90/120 lower fps refresh rate (for weaker GPUs)
+ Virtually no detectable SDF (screen door effect)
+ Extremely granular controllers, with finger tracking.
(Most devs haven't built this into their games yet)
+ 130 degree field of view, best in class
+ Fantastic near-field speakers
+ Pass-through camera views
+ Vive & Index have the largest game compatibility (and can play Oculus "exclusives" too)
+ Includes Half-Life Alyx (HLVR)
+ Able to upgrade from Vive, since compatible with Vive base stations v1.0
~ Rift store with Revive
- Uses displayport to connect to PC instead of more common HDMI
- Base station tracking is less portable (though not hard to setup, really)
- Cost (About $500 headset alone, $750 with controllers, * $800 with base station v1.0, * $1000 with base station v2.0)
* NOTE: See $200 off the Valve Index trick below!
++ See "Accessories" below for Mini Displayport laptop adapters
* NOTE: Click here for $280 Index Controller upgrade options (if already have Vive HMD & Lighthouses)
* NOTE: Click here for $500 HMD upgrade options (if already have Vive Lighthouses & controllers setup)
* NOTE: Click here for $750 HMD + Controller upgrade option (if already have Vive Base Stations)

PSVR2 + PS5 console
• Great reviews so far
• NOT many games BUT all very good games
• NOT PCVR (steam) compatible, and likely never will be

HP Reverb G2 (Steam page)
Future alternative with better specs than the Rift S, but TBD testing results.

* $200 off the Valve Index trick! (Vive base stations)
• Like some have done, purchase a used Vive set on eBay. Keep the lighthouses, then sell the set and clearly state excludes lighthouses. JoinUsInVR members have done this successfully and then the net Index cost is about $800. You can even turn a profit on your used Vive if you sell the controllers separate from the HMD.
View upgrade options starting at to see the differnt Valve Index buying choices

$700 to 1,200 Pimax 5k
+ 200 degree field of view (some say it's worth it for sitting driving Sims)
- Heavy distortions at edges of screen
- Dim LCD performance
- Generally considered unrefined/uncomfortable
- Did we mention it's $1200? (unless you find a steep sale)

AMD GPU with Quest PCVR
• AMD GPU significantly reduces quality of PCVR on Quest 1 & Quest 2. And possibly on Quest 3 also.

You DON'T have a PC w/ GTX 960 or better...
• If you don't have a PC, and prioritize short term cost & portability over high quality & data privacy, consider the Quest 2.
• Realize however that even when plugged into a PC, the video quality is reduced vs other PCVR setups. But for the headset money, it's amazing. However games can get expensive if they are not via Steam. As well, the hand tracking with controllers is not as good as the Index/Vive/Rift options (though is pretty good, and good enough for 98% of the time)
• Also realize games on the quest tend to cost more, have reduced video quality, and have reduced choices of games.
• 'Meta' adds complexity and privacy and restrictions. Some who try to cheat that have had their headset and games deactivateby Meta.

As someone who owns the Samsung Odyssey+ (and has owned a Rift and a PSVR) I can tell you it's simply amazing for the price. If properly configured (see my WMR Tips and Tricks thread) it's tracking is in the 95-99% range and for the price it's optics are insane. To get an OLED screen and AKG headphones for roughly $200 if you shop around is just nuts!

Another point worth mentioning about the Samsung Odyssey plus is the huge sweet spot compared to other headsets. With the right adjustments, There is 100 percent screen usability all the way to the edges. For some with odd shaped faces an aftermarket facepad may be needed to get closer to the lenses more comfortably.;

For full body tracking, there are a lot of different alternatives. You can use things from smart camera sensors to other VR controllers to tracking pucks and suits. While I don't have any experience with suits and controllers, I have been using a Kinect for quite some time. This video is a very good comparison between low, medium, and high budget tracking systems:
https://youtu.be/ERyHRpDGHlc
As for the kinect, you need quite a bit of room as it needs to be at the very front, and also some way to elevate it to about neck or near height, but also at an angle as the sensor needs to be able to clearly see the direction of the feet and keep most of the body in frame (at least the lower body). The tracking isn't great but it is decent. You won't be able to do dances and flips and all that stuff, even if you do other things like wear LED or neon colored bands. It can however track very simple movement of the body, nothing too fast, and nothing too crazy or confusing (like crossing your legs, sitting sideways, or standing backwards) but it is one of the cheapest fullbody tracking solutions out there, especially if you already own a kinect. Used kinects can be fairly low cost and adapters to USB or other ports are also low cost. I, myself, am getting pretty tired of the restrictions and issues with kinect tracking and am planning on switching to tracking pucks when I can save enough for them, but if this is something you want to try, I recommend it because of the price and budget, especially if it is just something you wish to try or if it is a temporary solution.

As far as tracking pucks go, they are definitely one of the best solutions out there. They are less expensive to set up than suits (currently! this may change!!) and I have tried them before at college. They are very very accurate, as long as at least one of the sensors or stations can see the tracking puck. You must also make sure that the pucks don't get obscured by clothing and that there are little to no reflective surfaces around your playspace as those could create "deadzones" where tracking might be messed up or ignored. This is just due to how the tracking system works as reflective surfaces will bounce the infrared from the sensors.

first if you never experienced VR and afraid to get it because its so close to your eyes and think it will hurt.it wont hurt at all the lenses are alot less harmful to eyes than any monitor. And if your afraid of getting motion sickness theres plenty of 180 degree games that dont induce that.
if looking for low budget HMD odyssey+ oculus rift cv1 are both good options for the price 200-250$ but colors arent the best also if they are really bad theres an option with nvidia you have to change to fix that i even saw people using psvr on pc for some games probably dont work for most tho.
Now for the headsets i used and recommend to stay away 1. original vive because the controllers are big and heavy you wont have a good time. 2 Vive cosmos tracking is very very bad losing hands constantly and annoying you with messages in your face if room is too bright or too dark even if is fine, even if they fix it in the future the controllers are heavy uncomfortable use 4 batteries that run out in 1-2days in comparison to rift or rift s that use 2 baterries that last a week or more and its overall overpriced.
Oculus quest is pretty great but they willl release quest 2 that will be alot better so i would just wait for now if you want one capable to run without a pc.
My winner HMD for the price, quality and overall satisfaction is Oculus Rift S highly recommend it because it looks great, works great, has the least flaws, only minor ones like battery cage sometimes popping out when playing aggresively, setup is easy, tracking is wonderful really impressive for an inside out tracking only lost tracking 1 time in 2 months and even that was probably because of a mod in my game.controller as super light which is very important to me as i play games like beat saber and with heavy controllers my wrists cry from pain.Anyone interested in joining the VR side can pm me for more info and tips.

Awesome. Some great input and I love that you want to help others too! Glad you are getting active in the group chat.JoinUsInVR.com server too!

Can we jump in the VOICE channel in there sometime to talk through this all as I real-time update our master list up top?!?!? You can be playing in VR as I sit at the desk and type :D
Probably for any, but especially for the Index, the lenses are incredibly sensitive.
A little warning I heard too late is even a dirty microfiber cloth can leave scratches.
The microfiber cloths can be hand washed and air dried.
I also keep mine in a zip lock bag to avoid picking up dust.

Great idea on the bag!

When washing, what kind of soap do you recommend? Or is it best with just water since most
VR's so to not use chemicals? -thanks!

Most of the time you can just use warm water, not hot because it damages them. You shouldn't need soap too often unless you're using the same cloth to wash your car too. If you do use soap just use a very weak liquid soap, no strong chemicals, and rinse enough times for it to all be out of the cloth.

When you let it dry, just keep it separate of other laundry since it will pick up fabric from other kinds of cloth.

Good list. Any thoguhts on the items listed in the page above? Like, which should be the "best" ones, and which the "alternative"?
Does ANYONE have any recent Quest 2 links to deals on the HMD, and accessories like USB-C cable, battery, etc?

...I'm thinking of getting a QUEST 2 so I can bring VR to people who can't come to my house to try my Valve Index. (and it would be a nice backup in case my index died unexpectedly after 3 years)

You could use air link if you were going to use the cable for data transmission
