If you have not done so already, there are some improvements that have already been made by some (pretty awesome) modders. There's also a couple minor tweaks to change in the Skyrim config file, just like you'd edit any other games' configuration file.

In skyrim's .ini/config file (should be C:\Program Files (it should be in x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Skyrim...) or something similar, add these lines:

fdefaultfov=110 (this is what i like, obviously change to your liking to get rid of the uber-closeness of the vanilla fov).
iPresentInterval=0 (disables vsync, although some like to keep vsync enabled w/triple buffering).
bMouseAcceleration=1 (change this to 0, this will eliminate mouse lag which will inevitably happen). Also, download "cplmousefix" if you have mouse lag in any games.

That's it for the configuration settings, but the real problem is that Skyrim only utilizes two gigs of ram unless you change this. It takes like 5 minutes and gives you a huge performance boost, don't be lazy! It's worth it.

Sweet, so once you have those performance-boosting easies done, you can alter the games graphics if and how you see fit. There's already a lot of nice improvements, but I'm not changing anything terrain-related yet. The 5xxx series Nvidia cards are all not prepared for Skyrim (and the similar AMD line whatever that is right now), which is what a lot of people use right now. This game will run more efficiently soon with better drivers.
