The Wifi Testing Thread
Hi everyone,

I'm making this thread to hopefully pool everyones various tests using different routers and wifi bands.

First off, all of my tests are done with a wired desktop as a host and a wireless Macbook Pro running OSX Mavericks as the client.

Every test I did with b/g routers were barely playable in even the best test cases. Only games that aren't latency dependant (XCOM, Civ, etc) were playable.

However once I swapped to a full 5ghz band N router the experience greatly improved given the increase in bandwidth. Borderlands, a very busy game visually can run at 1080p 60FPS nearly flawlessly with only a few dips and minimal latency.

Realistically, in a working household full of Wifi devices I expect b/g routers to be pretty much useless given the extra in-house bandwidth taken up by avid Netflix / YouTube users.

I assume the majority of users are going to use Steam in-home streaming over Wifi, hopefully we can get a good knowledge base going to help Valve improve the experience.

This is a very nice intutive but in my opinion it isn't worth the salts sunce you can't use it wireless and wired connection pretty much disapeared from households long ago.

Ethernet connection is still the preferred network connection type. Ive never been a fan of wireless for anything other than casual internet browsing fro ma laptop. Any desktop computer in my house is wired, as is my 360 and PS4. I wouldnt game online with wireless connection, so it stands that game-streaming would be even worse. Wired connections are far from dead.
Host = home built win7 core i5 8 mb ram
client = zoostorm laptop that I bought for my wife a year or so ago for under £200.
Wifi router Draytek 2820

Played Doom3 last night no problems at all over wifi, couple of issues initially as it tried to load but thereafter sweet as a nut. admittedly I was on;y testing and only played for a few minutes but so far so good.

Host- Win 7 i7 16g ram gtx760 sli
Client- Surface pro
Router-Netgear WNR2000

Played Wolfenstien TNO flawlessly using 360 controller. Civ 5 worked excellent using touch controls (way better than it used to installed on the surface). Hell even sleeping dogs with hd texture pack ran like a dream =D. Now i can hook up my surface to my tv instead of having to move my tower over to play games (admittedly only really those with controller support =D)
Even works over Hamachi, Itested with a friend living about 1km away, with the res down to 720, in game, he said it was playable!

I was in my room , 6 meters from the router and I was surprised because the Steam In-Home Streaming currently works , but the games are flashing , even when I'm typing on messenger steam .
I decided to go to the room where the main pc is , and yet the games are flashing . I do not know what to do . I have a 10 mbps internet .

I use the router intelbras WRN 240

What could have gone wrong ? It would be a dream come true to play games like team fortress 2 on my lenovo laptop that barely runs half life 1 .

I hope someone can help me

Dá uma olhada se ambos computadores estão operando com 150Mbs, e tenta limitar o FPS no computador de destino, talvez isso ajude. Se precisar de mais ajuda, crie uma discussão nova e poste as configurações detalhadas de cada pc. :tgrin:
I played a 1.5 hour session of Borderlands 2, game running at 1920x1080 in the host PC, with Beautiful settings for streaming. Played through Hyperion Wild Preservation campaign and experimented some stuttering only once (just after passing the first skag section). I didn't notice any lag and framerate was OK (about 40 FPS). After returning to Sanctuary I began to experiment slow encoding/slow decoding messages and framerate dropped below 30 FPS.

Host details:

OS: Windows 8 Pro
CPU: i5 3330
RAM: 16 GB
GPU: Geforce GTX650 Ti Boost 2 GB
Network: Gigabit Ethernet. Measured about 24 MB/s.

Guest details:

OS: Mac OS X Mavericks.
CPU: i7 2720QM
RAM: 8 GB
GPU: Radeon HD6750M 512 MB
Network: Wireless N 5 GHz. Measured about 14 MB/s.

Router: Asus RT-AC66U.
Host Details(Desktop):
OS: Windows 7
CPU i5 4670
RAM: 16GB
GPU: GeForce GTX760
Network: Gigabit Ethernet

Guest Details(Macbook Pro - from early 2011):
OS: Mac OSX Maverick
CPU: i5 2.4GHZ (forget the exact model)
RAM: 4GB
GPU: GeForce GTM 330M (plus an on-board Intel card)
Network: Wireless N

Router: Linksys EA3500 N750

Tested:
Binding of Isaac and Diablo 3
Resolution: 1440x900
FPS: 60
Impressions: Games looked great (albeit not quite as high resolution as my desktop which was expected), maintained 60fps throughout and zero lag. There was no packet loss or any stuttering at all despite being on wireless and not on the same floor as my router. I was planning on testing Skyrim, Titanfall, BF4 and a few heavier hitters this weekend, although I was very impressed with the Diablo 3 test particularly. The games felt as smooth as though I were playing them on my desktop which was very nice. I also found that while streaming my laptop wasn't really slowed down at all, I was able to easily multi-task out do whatever, and pop back in with no noticable issues.
Short summary: Try a 5Ghz router because you might have a lot of neighboring intereference from 2.4Ghz (like from your neighbors). Streaming in Steam works for me—absolutely flawlessly—when I use a 5Ghz Wi-Fi channel.

Streaming over Wi-Fi is working incredibly well for me. Zero delay, responsive controls, great picture and audio, as if I was there at my desktop computer.

Please take note that my wireless network is using the 5Ghz band. The 2.4Ghz wireless channels are too congested in my area (apartment complex), so I bought a 5Ghz capable router a year ago.

My thought is this: if you're trying to stream over your 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi connection, set your router to a less congested 2.4Ghz channel—especially if you're in an apartment complex or college dorms, as the majority of your neighbors are sharing the same 2.4Ghz spectrum with you. If changing 2.4Ghz router channels doesn't alleviate the issue, I highly advise buying a 5Ghz capable router and using that. It was the best router investment I've made. Streaming is flawless in Steam "Homestream". Other streaming activities like NHL Gamecenter, movies, etc., used to be very, very poor when I was on the 2.4Ghz band even with a strong Wi-Fi signal. Wi-Fi signal strength shown by your devices, like your laptop, does not take into account neighboring interference and any packet retransmissions.
Host
OS: Windows 8.1
Memory: 12GB RAM
Connection: 1GBIT Cable
Processor: Intel Core I7 3770K @ 2.5Ghz
Graphics Card: EVGA Nvidia GTX 690

Client
OS: Windows 7 premium 32-bit
Memory: 2GB Ram
Connection: 64 Mbps Wi-Fi adapter
Processor: AMD Athlon 7750 Dual core @ ~2.7 GHZ
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 4000 Series

Results -
-- Sometimes a warning of slow decode but it's going away in a couple of seconds
-- Mouse/Controller worked in all games
-- All games have the same results : Playable, but sometimes a little bit laggy because of "Slow internet"(720P HD,~50-60FPS)(E.G : Bioshock Infinite and Payday 2)
-- Kinda weird i need to restart the stream to fix the Slow internet because it won't fix itself.(Shutdown the stream with Task)

I'm happy with this new feature finnaly we can play games on a Low end PC instead of wasting more money to buy one( although you need atleast one :P) but it has a long way to go to call it "Good".

Streaming 1080p60 pretty much flawlessly using

Desktop (Wired):
CPU - i5-4570s
RAM - 16GB
Graphics - GTX770
OS - Windows 8.1

Laptop (Wireless AC):
Macbook Pro 13.3" Retina
CPU - 2.4ghz i5
RAM - 8GB
Graphics - Intel Iris
OS - OS X Mavericks

Using an Apple Extreme Wireless AC router

I have only tried Bit.Trip 2, Child of Light, and Family Guy Road to The Multiverse.

I noticed Child of Light had some slight jutter now and then, but the majority of the time it's 60fps held up just fine. Might try it wired to see if that jutter goes away at all. But it's rare and now and then...
Streaming from my host PC to my low-end HP laptop over WiFi works surprisingly well. Played Bioshock Infinite at 720p 60FPS smoothly. I have a $40 Belkin home router, and Steam in Home Streaming over WiFi works great! :)
(I did have an issue with a Portal 2 crashing, but nothing other than that.)
Running an old laptop core 2 duo at only 2.0ghz with 4gb ram. Runs flawlessly so far on every game on my wifi. Wifi speed is at 113mbps. 11ms ping N/AC router. This is at less then 720P cause my laptop doesnt support it.
Desktop: AMD Phenom II x4 + GeForce GTX 660 on 1Gbps Ethernet
Laptop #1: Core i7 + GeForce GT 630M on 802.11n WIFI
Laptop #2: Core 2 Duo + GeForce 8600M GS on 1Gbps Ethernet

Streaming from desktop to both laptops works without any lost packets or frames at 1080p 60 FPS perfectly.
Streaming from laptop #1 to desktop and the other laptop works without any lost packets or frames at 1600x900 60 FPS perfectly.
I'm having some lag on my connection, I perhaps need to tweak some things, I will post specs on my network setup, hardware used, ect soon. I am also having an issue with Max Payne 3, I have to start it on the host PC first, then click "stream" on client. I have not tested any other game, with exception of GTA vice city, which seemed to open without issue.
Host - i7-930 clocked to 3.2 Ghz, 12GB RAM, GTX660
Client Dell i3 Laptop
Router - Buffalo N300
Worked flawlessly playing Mortal Kombat Komplete with Xbox 360 controller.
I have a power line connection to the media center but didn't test ethernet.
