How to change the hardware encoder?
Hey guys,

does someone knows how to change the hardware encoder? A system with a Intel Haswell-CPU and a graphics card from AMD has two options for hardware encoding: Intel Quicksync and AMD VCE. Steam In-Home Streaming seems to choose the hardware encoder bound to the primary graphics card, in this case AMD VCE. But it would be great, to switch the encoder so IHS uses Intel Quicksync over AMD VCE - for better results.

Thanks in advance and best regards,
Mark

AMD is actively improving their encoding. Can you try yesterday's beta update and let us know what aspect of Intel encoding is better than AMD encoding?

Thanks!

strange, here it defaults most of the time on quicksync.

would love to have the ability to force a specific encoder, if only for testing purposes.

As a Nvidia user, I also wanted an option like that.

Sorry to hijack this thread but hope this helps.

I'm in a similar position (ie. Quicksync > AMD encoding). My main issue with AMD encoding is:
Windowed games: stuttering
Full Screen games: drop of 20-30fps compared with quicksync.

Quicksync IQ seems slightly better on Fifa 15 (as an example) - the grass textures are less blocky. Could be subjective though.

I tried yesterdays beta update but didn't notice any improvement.

More positively, software encoding is better than AMD and to be honest quite satisfactory overall (its a long time since I tried it).

Host is i5 3570k, Radeon 7950 Boost
Client is an i3 with intel HD for decoder.

Slouken, keep up the good work with IHS!

Did anyone ever find an answer to this? I have been streaming Mirror's Edge using Quicksync. I just upgraded my graphics card from an AMD to an NVIDIA card and now it's using the NVIDIA encoder and Mirror's Edge no longer loads correctly. I'm guessing it has something to do with the encoder not working with PhysX. I would like to change back to Quicksync if anyone knows how.

Check out this thread - it is for AMD cards but may work with the equivalent nvidia directory. https://steamcommunity.com/groups/homestream/discussions/0/617320628217643948/

Hey, thanks for the reply. I gave it a shot, but it doesn't seem to work for NVIDIA. All the files in that folder seem to be actual AMD files, so I wonder if there is a similar folder for NVIDIA? I'm looking, but I haven't found anything yet.
