75% of games are missing sound, can anyone help?[SOLUTION]

Okay I've since fixed this, it's to do with the Asus Software(Which comes as no real surprise)


Go to your Asus Xonar DG/X audio centre software directory and launch the .exe called "mxmon.exe". This is some sort of software mixer which routes all your applications through the default windows mixer, which somehow, fixed pretty much all my issues I've been having with audio.

I've been in the streaming beta since the last wave of invites. I'm having some trouble with audio, the streaming works fine and is smooth at 30-60FPS, but most of the games I play are missing sounds, the biggest culprits are: Valve/Source games and most Steamworks games. I've tested about 20 games, about 17 didn't have sound.


My hardware:
Intel Core i3 3.4Ghz
GTS 450
Asus DGX Sound Card

I've tried on multiple clients, Same results.

I searched for a solution and had no luck, I did try changing the audio quality to 16-bit, but it made no difference, I also fiddled with my sound card settings, changed a bunch of setting and made no difference, I just asume it's the culprit as nobody else is having these issues.

In your Steam installation directory on the host there should be a log, i.e

X:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\logs

Can you paste the streaming_log.txt here? It might give a clue.

If you search for 'error' in your StreamAudioTrace.txt log file does it come up with anything? That's usually a big file, so don't you might need notepad+ etc to open it and search.

Which game sound works and which one doesn't by the way (i.e. one out of the 70%)

If you search for 'error' in your StreamAudioTrace.txt log file does it come up with anything? That's usually a big file, so don't you might need notepad+ etc to open it and search.

Which game sound works and which one doesn't by the way (i.e. one out of the 70%)

Sleeping Dogs is the only one In that list I can name, there were more, such as Sonic 4 Episdoe 1, Scribblenauts Unlimited, Dead Island, Dead Rising 2 and Left 4 Dead 2.

My best guess (sorry!) would be on how each game is defaulting on which sound device to pick and encode. Have you tried disabling all other playback devices, i.e. run this from the command line:

control mmsys.cpl sounds

..and disable all but the Xonar?

Unfortunately I've already tried this, I've had a ton of sound issues before on this PC, it's the reason I bought the sound card, so everything but the Xonar DGX was already disabled.

The strangest part is, that all the games with issues, used to play sound through the PC until the update that muted it, So the sound is working, just isn't streaming to my client. Which points me toward an issue while either encoding the audio, or the client decoding it.

Are there any logs I can check on my client? as it could be a problem decoding

(I tried multiple clients like I said, but it's worth a shot right?)

(On a side note, ALL non-steam games/apps I tested, had full sound)

I am having a very similar result.

I have an ASUS Xonar DGX on the host PC and am not getting any audio in most games. Games like TF2 and CS:GO have no audio. I have been able to get audio streaming in various games, including DOTA 2.

The logs don't reveal any errors or failures of note.

I have an ASUS Xonar also, I also have many games with no audio. I fixed it by setting my default audio device to the system's built in SPDIF audio.

Unfortunately this isn't a solution for me, I replaced my internal card with the Xonar as it was faulty.

Just to let you guys with know, I've found a solution! Go to your Asus Xonar DG/X audio centre software directory and launch the .exe called "mxmon.exe". This is some sort of software mixer which routes all your applications through the default windows mixer, which somehow, fixed pretty much all my issues I've been having with audio, it also fixed the in home streaming.

I'm glad to hear you found something to fix your issue. Unfortunately, that method didn't change anything on my setup. Still not getting sound. I checked my task manager and mxmon.exe is running in the background now, but even if I relaunch steam no luck. Thanks for the idea though

A bit late to the party but the solution I found to make Steam in-house streaming work with my Asus Xonar HDAV 1.3 was simply to turn off anything DSP mode related.

Note that the Xonar HDAV center says "DSP Mode: None" regardess of whether or not it's actually processing anything - somewhat misleading.
