Interesting is Equal to Different

Although I appreciated the dark tone and emotion of the film, I think my experience was partially ruined by people kicking my seat, children screaming, and stupid teens laughing because they would rather watch the StepFather. BUT, with that being said, I do remember quite a bit of this overall faithful adaption. When the DVD comes out, I will most likely watch this again, but this time, with no little kids, no annoying teens, and no seats to kick.

The story that captivated many when the book first hit shelves is still here. Its brilliant, yet simplistic. But the film has a little something extra. And its called Dark Elements. Yes, this film has a dark tone to the story, which I actually appreciated. This tells the story of a misunderstood boy named Max, whom is having a tough relationship with his family. That becomes a big problem, and eventually he attempts to run away. Max then creates the Wild Things. Things fell much more alive then, and the story really progresses. But there are a lot of bumps in the road. You see, this isn't a story that struck me as really brilliant or powerful, but it had some great dark themes and messages, which ultimately saved it. Story gets 70%.

Max is the same lovable boy you remember. But strangely, the movie and book were never really about him. They were about the Wild Things. The movie goes farther into their emotional and often times dark turmoils. That is what makes the characters so great in the film. Each individual Wild Thing is somewhat unique, in terms of emotional quality. All together, very interesting characters. Characters get 80%.

The movie has some very impressive visuals. It has it's moments of extreme professional filmography. It is well shot, and the Wild Things are well animated. The environments look great as well. Visuals get 80%.

The music choice is OK. Its mostly music that fits right with the mood and the scene, but there isn't anything I really want to hear again. Music gets 50%.

This is not a kids movie. I want to dress that. But unlike a lot of critics, this film does not deserve points off for being uninteresting for young ones. I thought it was a great idea for Spike Jones to take charge and aim the film towards adults. But it isn't for everyone. Some people don't like their Wild Things dark and moody. But then again, some, like I, do. The kids won't really enjoy it, given that all the tender emotions alone should be hard to grasp, and some scenes may be to frightening. I heard kids SCREAM. What idiot parent would not look in to this before they bring some annoying kid into a theater to ruin someones movie experience? Apparently many.

Although I left kind of disappointed, this is something worth seeing, and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good, dark movie. It was a good adaption, and quite humerus. I say, rent this film.
