What is Chaos Skirmish?

Welcome to the event about cooperation and random luck. Chaos Skirmish is the biggest 4v4 event in Guns of Icarus Online, featuring randomized crews and loadouts. We take the most dedicated captains and shy engineers and place them where you wouldn’t see them any other day.

When does the Skirmish start?

Lobby opening starts at 9:30PM EST! However, if you’re on our Discord or our Steam Group, you get the lobby password 10 minutes early! Lobby does open late for those in Europe. My apologies.

Can anyone join the Skirmish?

Well, yeah. If this event wasn’t public, no one would show up. As a certain pasta once told us, rank doesn’t matter. No matter where you are in Guns of Icarus, 5 minutes into the game and skipping the tutorial, or you’ve been playing since the beta testing, you’re welcome to come to the event!

How does “randomizing” work?

We have a few special engineers come in an they developed a special program made to randomize the lobby with only the press of a button and a screenshot of all your pretty names. Through this randomizer, people will be assigned to a ship and crew at random. You’ll most likely be thrown into roles you don’t often play. But that’s the beauty of Chaos.

In order to move into your proper place in the lobby, you’ll have to listen to the designated speaker who will be calling out where everyone goes and what role you’ll be given. When you hear your name called for a specific spot, find that spot and use the “Swap Slot” function with the person currently in that place. We keep swapping throughout the randomization period until everyone is where they need be.

What else do I need to know?

The match is, typically, a 4 versus 4. The first match, only the Captains of the ships are randomized. This means that 8 random people in the lobby will be placed as captains.The second and third matches, the lobby is fully randomized, but the second round is a surprise ruleset coming from your Hosts and the third is the community chosen ruleset. A weekly poll is created and put up by Lysanya to vote on.

Voting for the community ruleset involves picking betwen 3 of our rulesets. Whatever ruleset wins is played in the third round. The other two will remain on the poll until they win. Don’t be upset if you don’t get to play your favourite ruleset. It’ll have to be played EVENTUALLY.

So that’s it then.

Not going to lie, I woke up this afternoon with teary eyes.

But we had fun, right?

Through the highs and lows we always did what we could to keep things going. Sometimes it was easy, other times fraught and like wrangling a bag of mad cats in the midday Sun. We saw through the game being updated to Alliance, we witnessed the blessing of Brawl, we squinted at Skyball and even threw in a Squid Race or two.

I won’t lie, it even got a little scary quiet at times as the population dipped to single digits. We wondered to each other if it was worth keeping it going, holding out hope it would turn around.

And then there were the times the whole population of GOI crammed into our lobby, a bunch of 36 perfect and wonderful strangers gathered around a bonfire of structured anarchy for the love of a unique old game.

Even to the end, we had new faces show up in our lobbies and old timers showing them the ropes. We had players who hadn’t logged in for years come back surprised our little event was still going, and happy to rediscover this little corner of an ever growing steam library.

I always promised at the end of each week we’d keep doing it as long as people kept showing up … but life has made me a liar.

I’m sorry for that. I really truly am. And I know the other hosts and mods feel that way too.

This community has been one of the friendliest, most open and sincerely welcoming places I have ever encountered. Finding a group so simply good and decent in this strange world of ours has been something I continue to be thankful for every single day, and I know that if you wanted to you’d be able to throw together a Chaos of your own. I’m sure some of you can even imitate an accent too, and hey maybe I’ll even be in the lobby to hear it.

So that’s it then.

The last flares have faded. Randall goes to sleep satisfied. The mandatory fun zone has closed. The kiss cam captured its last ram. The final password has been guessed. The number game has been and gone. The spectator ship has sailed into the sunset.

And I must admit, I’m tired.

But I sure as hell did have fun.

And I know the torch is passed on to good hands now - yours.

It’s been a pleasure, always and forever.
